DiMarzio DP149's or DiMarzio DP249's work very well in this style of bass with NO hum...

Please review the spec's below:

http://www.dimarzio.com/pickups/bass

I prefer the DP149's because I play classic rock and country and these have the lows that I am after. The DP249's have more upper end.

I just ordered a set of 149s. I could not turn down either of my pickups, the bass started humming.

Mine is an American Jazz, I find it disturbing that Fender has not corrected this known problem, they provide you with the capability of turning down/off either pickup, but this does not work as it creates noise.

This is the traditional Jazz bass design that players have known and loved for 55 years.

You found the initial problem and fixed it when you reversed the polarity of one pickup.

That is what the original Jazz bass was and still is all about.

I can tell you that during a performance - You cannot hear the buzz.

I know that it is annoying when you are practicing, but you really don't have to change the pickups. Just use it with one PU in reverse polarity as it was designed to work and ignore the buzz when you turn down one pickup.

I had a Precision bass that had this problem and it drove me nuts!
It turned out that one half of the Precision pickup was wired in reverse polarity and that bass buzzed all of the time until I found the problem and reversed it.

I found out that you can copper tape everything and not make a difference if there is a wiring error in your instrument.
