Hello all,
New member here,
Just recently recieved this fine MIM Fender Jazz Standard bass.
Im quite pleased with it to say the least.
I think it's a great quality, highly playable, fine looking bass.
Afetr searching the usual links and even emailing customer support I have been unable to ascertain the the date of manufacture for this.
The serial number sequence is MX10155XXX.
I was told at the time of trade that it is a 2010 model.
It has a black body with maple neck.
The pickguard is black, which I believe to be a replacement as most every one of these models that I found new had a white pickguard.
Heres the pics to meet the no pic no bass thing:

http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/xx47 ... z/Body.jpg

Also I would like to replace the stock volume pots with linear taper CTS pots, and replace the bridge saddles with the vintage threaded style.
Some guidance in sourcing these two items would be greatly appreciated.
Thanx for viewing,
Jeff

Sorry I can't help you in regards to your parts quest, but I wanted to say that is a nice looking bass. Like you I have only seen them with the white pickguard and I like the black much better.

Congrats and enjoy!

Welcome to the Forums. Very nice bass. I have a 2010 MIM Standard, sunburst with rosewood neck. It plays and sounds great. I really like the all black with maple.

Be patient, someone will be along to answer your questions. My guess is, Brother Dave or Stroker Vance. Not to say that there aren't others willing to help.

If the pickguard is stock/original, then it could be a FSR (Fender Special Run) bass. Fender does limited production instruments specifically for one outlet or another with slightly different features than stock models. At one time I think you could do a run of as few as 150, but not sure that is still the case. Often these are done for very major retailers like Guitar Center or Musicians Friend, but other times for smaller chains and dealers. There was a Strat USA special run in Fiesta Red when that color was not generally available several years back with Texas Special Custom Shop pickups for a smaller midwestern USA chain. There were only 150 of those. Being a FSR might explain why you have a black guard. For example Guitar Center had a FSR Fender Standard MIM P-bass with ash body and tort guard not too long ago that you couldn't find anywhere else and presently Sweetwater has several exclusive FSR models. Usually the FSR models are priced the same as the mass produced generic models which makes them very attractive as they are somewhat unique in some regard. Yours may have other unique features other than just the pickguard that distinguishes it from general mass production models.

As for the vintage bridge with the grooved saddles I was actually very recently shopping around for one as I was doing a vintaging project on a 2004 Sunburst MIM P-Bass. This part is named "FENDER VINTAGE BASS BRIDGE" and the Fender part number is 0990804100. There are SEVERAL online parts dealers that carry them. The two best online prices I found were: http://www.darrenriley.com/shop/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=795
and...
http://angela.com/vintagebassbridge.aspx

These two places were about $10 under anyone else. I've done business both places and can recommend either as both ship same or next day and are very reliable and reputable parts sources. The one that is actually cheaper for you will depend on differences in shipping costs to your location. If you get a big enough order up, shipping will be free. It is interesting that one Fender part is 25 to 30% cheaper one place than another when the same isn't true on finished instruments isn't it?

Thank you guys.
I ordered the bridge from Musicians Friend, good price and free shipping.
The only other mod I wish to make is to change the volume pots to CTS Linear Tapers.
Digging around to find the best price on those.
Im really enjoying this bass.
I believe it is strung with DR Lowriders, sounds nice but I think Im going to try the GHS Pressure wounds on it.
I have a set on my cheap Ibanez GSR200 with emgs and I really like the sound. Clarity, evenness, deep and articulate when I want it to be, and can add grind with my volume and tone controls.
Anyone else use the Pressurewounds on their Jazz that can give some feedback?
Jeff

I can see putting a linear pot in the tone circuit before in both volume circuits. You can put them in of course and they will work.

I guess you got those from Musicians Friend also. I think you need solid shafts. Guitar Parts Resource has them if you still need some.

The MIM Fenders already have CTS audio taper pots so you won't gain anything in quality or tone, but they will function differently, requiring you to turn it more before it makes much difference. I would however most certainly tweak the tone circuit to my personal tasted with a different tone capacitor. The linear pots are not going to make any tonal difference whatsoever, just operational. If you do change the pots I would change the tone cap at the same time if you want to do something that will actually impact the instrument's tone.

Funny you got a better deal from the Evil Empire than Darren's or Angela. That usually is not the case at all. But I order lots of stuff at once from both places so I usually get free shipping. MF does have free shipping on everything right now, business must be off again there. It would be a good time to order an 8x10 cab and a tube head wouldn't it? LOL.

Good luck with your project. I think you'll like that bridge. Once I get one of those setup perfectly I put a dab of clear fingernail polish on the saddle elevation screw threads under the saddle to keep them rock steady. As soon as you twist the screw with an Allen wrench the nail polish cracks off like it was never there and you can adjust normally.

Thanx for the feedback and advice Dave.
The reason for the volume pot change is that the audio taper has a narrow adjustment window, only about the last 18 to 20% of volume. Id like a more linear control over the available volume range when mixing the 2 pups as I dont use both volume pots maxed all the time. Research has indicated that this is typical with a jazz bass. the tone I will keep as an audio taper pot.
I actually ordered the pots from allparts, having dealt with them on several occasions.
By the way, I bookmarked your link, alot of great information there!

What change would you make to the tone cap?
I didnt think the pots, if kept at the 250 k ohm rating, would have any effect.

Correct, the impedance of the pots are the same. That means they will make no difference in tone, just in operation. I mentioned a tone cap mod because that is a really cheap but effective mod that can make a difference in tone, and you were in the neighborhood.

Most USA and MIM Fender basses over the past 20 years came with Poly Chicklets and then in recent years the Ceramic Disc type of the 50's, 60's and 70's reappeared. Different type caps (Paper In Oil Vitamin-Q types or Mylar) can result in smoother, richer tones with less distortion or in harshier, edgier tones (like in the majority of Poly and Ceramic Disc caps.) It just depends on what type tone you want. If you love the general tone of the instrument now, there is no real need to change the cap.

As sort of a sidebar, just because the pot is stamped 250k doesn't mean it is precisely 250k. There is a tolerance factor, meaning there can be a variance but to be in tolerance each pot should check out between 225 and 275k.

Thank you brotherdave,
I like the tone for now, but I've just begun to explore the bass.
It's my first Fender, and my first Jazz.
I really am enjoying it.
Would you know what pickups are referred to as "New Jazz Pickups" on this 2010 model.
I cannot seem to find any information on them at all!
Id at least like to get a part number and what other basses in the Jazz line these are installed in.
Jeff

Sorry but I don't know the answer to the NEW JAZZ pickup question. You can possibly get the part number off the parts list for that instrument. You can request the parts list by contacting consumer relations using the SUPPORT tab. They can possibly email that parts list to you and the part number would be on it. I have not seen them for sale individually and they are not listed with the rest of the pickups marketed that I can see.

Okay,
So I acquired 2 cts linear taper pots and removed the control plate.
I have a question about the black wires coming from each pickup.
On my bass, both black wires are soldered to the tone pot, while every diagram I have seen has the black pickup wires soldered to their respective volume pots.
Is this bass miswired or am I missing something here.
Thank you in advance,
Jeff

I just picked up a new Fretless standard (made in 2011) from Musicians Friend and very pleased with it. Mine also is in Black. Just ordered a tort pickguard to replace the stock parchment one and slapped a Gotoh 201 bridge on it. Everything else is staying stock. I was looking for a low cost Fretless and originally picked up a Squier VM Jazz Fretless which was a huge disappointment. This new MIM Jazz Fretless is leaps better than the Squier.

Got the pots installed, sounds great and the volume adjustments are alot smoother now.
With this mod and the addition of the threaded bridge saddles this bass is all set.
A fantastic bass!
