From what you said, you have more foam material. try trimming the foam that covers the G string. I've used every kind of foam, sponge and felt. You may be surprised how well felt works too, I have covers on both my Jazz and Precision.

Nice thing about home made mutes, they're cheap.

You're welcome. On rounds I usually use a wedge shaped piece of foam so there is the least foam on the G string then taper it so the most foam is against the E and A string. I use packing type foam, which is less dense than the weatherstrip foam Fender used on the metal covers. You can just trim the foam to get the desired amount of muting. I also put it UNDER the strings instead of on top. And yes, the closer you move it to the bridge the less impact the muting has. I do it this way so I can remove the mute entirely if I want by just removing the foam from under the strings. When the foam is glued to the bridge cover, this isn't so easily or quickly done.

On flats I use a felt wrap, not foam. Some flats don't need muting at all even when new like Labella 760M or GHS 3050 Regulars. The TI Jazz Flats JF344's however definitely do, for a while anyway till they mellow some.
