I just got my AM STD J yesterday, and the action is so low its amazing. Just one problem, the A string has a good loud buzz when played open. So I raised the action on the string but now it is WAY higher than the other 3. Could it be that the nut was just filed to low? Help please

:( That's a bummer. But by all means send it back to the dealer and get it fixed under Fender warranty. I'm sure they will make it all better :)
Had a new MIM once that developed such a bad bow in the neck you could have used it to  shoot arrows. but took it back to the dealer and Fender replaced the neck; no questions asked :D

I waited 5 weeks for this thing to be sent to me, if i can just replace the nut i will be just fine with that. I don't want to wait any longer. I just don't want to have to have an A string twice as high as the other. Sucks about your neck though

I understand.
I am blessed to have a Fender dealer in town.
Drive by it every day to and from work. So easy if any troubles and needs.

drop in, stop and buy, chats. Love it, man. Peace, david
PS: stick a match / toothpick under the string at the neck and if this alleviates the buzz than a nut repair is the answer. Maybe a high fret close to the nut? Maybe the neck truss rod needs a tweak?

Ok guys, I tried the match it didn't really help a whole lot. It is the only string that is doing that. Any other suggestions?

I think I figured it out. I believe I have a little bit of a back bow in the neck. I am going to work on it tomorrow and let everyone know. Thanks guys. Btw, Fender, I'm dissapointed

Yeah, I don't know what's up with that. My bass had to be special ordered so I know it wasn't sitting on the floor, it was factory to store. I just don't know how that got through inspection, it was very obvious as soon as i picked it up. O well. I'll figure it out

I'm waiting on a new neck that was sent back twice on my custom shop jazz. It had an obvious defect too. Been waiting four months for mine so I feel your pain.

Ouch, I would be raising some serious questions with Fender over that. Where is Brad to defend the honor of Fender? Maybe he could clue us in to these problems. I'm not just busting on Fender to do it. I just wanted my bass to be perfect the first time I played it.

There was a gentleman over on another forum that custom ordered a masterbuilt strat that took I believe a year to get. He got the guitar and it came with clay position markers instead of abalone as was ordered. He doesn't want to send it back because he had already waited a long wait. Masterbuilts are not inexpensive but I don't blame him, I was told I wouldn't have too wait to long, now I'm waiting longer then what it took to build the whole bass. If they send it back be ready to get too know customer service , you'll have to keep on them and your dealer.

Im pretty sure I will just adjust the truss rod and go with that. It looks like its a back bend issue, so I won't be sending it back

Just a tweak of the rod should do it. A little turn and wait for settling. When an instrument comes all the way across country and different climatic conditions such as humidity, temperature, sunlight levels, etc are realized, the neck usually shifts. I like picking up a new bass at the dealer for this reason - it gets a "hometown" setup before you take it home. If it has to be shipped long distance direct to your doorstep then you have to do the setup yourself. Very common occurrence.
I have "setup" one guitar several times in the first few months before it actually settles for good and feels "just right".
some like it high, some like it low
some aint so fussy, and some want it just so...
Let us know how it goes.
Peace. david

I've seen/heard this problem before, and each time it was due to the 'break angle' of the string going over the nut. The cure for it is to make sure that the section of string (from the nut to tuning peg) is as low or far down on the bottom of the peg as possible; is will make for a better angle past the nut.

This is the very reason some manufactures use an downward angled headstock.
