I have an ever so elusive "black label" jazz bass from the 90's. While at a concert earlier this year, Victor Wooten signed the pickplate for me. I've since removed it and display it in my china cabinet. Little did I know at the time, that this part is becoming quite impossible to find. It's a one piece pickguard, all of the knobs and one pickup hole are in it. Does anyone know a way I could get another one? I tried emailing customer relations, and they have not responded.Image

Posting a couple of pics might help a lot.

can't you see the pic in the post? it's the only one I currently have... it's a 14 hole single piece pick guard. It's not from one of the custom j-basses, the holes on those do not line up with this one.

I think it's a Standard Jazz Bass pickguard from the early-to-mid 1980s.

These basses can be easily recognized from their white pickup covers and matching Stratocaster control knobs.

I have the same problem with certain image hosting services. I suggest photobucket as I know that one works.

Chromeface the guard is slightly different from the 83/84 Fender Fullerton Standard Jazz you posted. But similar in size.

Yes those MIM integral control guards are hard to find. You will either have to find a used one on eBay from someone parting one out or have one made. If you want to have one made several people can assist. I'd make a tracing of the existing one you have and then any custom maker can copy it. Or it actually is better to send the original one in for the closest possible copy. It will be returned with your new guard of course. By sending in your original guard you will get a precise copy. Tracing copies are not as precise, but close enough for jazz. (Pardon the pun.)

Check this page: http://pickguards.us/price_jazzbass.html
Look near the bottom of that page to the Standard ones that contain the control holes to get an idea of the price. Those were the latter day CBS USA ones though like the one in the photo Chromeface posted and will not exactly fit a MIM, but the cost should be about the same since the general size is the same and the amount of material required is the same.

You can get a custom one cut by clicking here: http://pickguards.us/pgordinst.htm
The choice of material will dictate the price. I'd stick to the original type material if you want to hold down the cost. Depending on material selection it looks like it will cost between $38 and about $77 plus postage to have one made for a Jazz with control holes.

If you know someone locally with a CNC machine around then they might could make one for you if you have the material. You can buy blank pickguard material and cut one yourself or have a shop do it. Many machine shops have CNC machines now. They can copy about anything. I doubt a local machine shop would do it for less than Pickguard Heaven but it would not hurt to shop around at all. Maybe you have a friend taking a CNC class at a trade school for all I know!

Good luck.

My drummer actually works at a construction company and has a CNC machine there. I tried getting him to take the pick plate and throw it in the scanner to make a copy or two, but he doesn't wanna take it out of my house due to the sentimental value he know it holds to me haha. I keep trying to tell him I trust him with it. There's a few metal fabricating shops in my area, maybe I can get one of them to do it. I was just wondering if before going through the trouble I could find a proper Fender part to keep it as original as possible. Thanks for all the help though! I really appreciate it! I miss playing this bass so I need to do something soon!!

I've seen similiar pickguard on few 199x Fender Standards (MIM) and MIM Squiers. J-Bass, of course :D

I guess those MIM Standards were "Squier Series", but owners clear this logo away = )

Nah, I never scraped the "squier series" off of mine! I'm secure in the fact it's still a Fender!

Mine's a 90's version. Great bass though!

They were not all Squier Series. The first two years of Ensenada production was like that. It was fashioned after the 83/84 USA Jazz guard.
