Would love to know where he grounded things so we could make the repairs to our basses. I'm pretty good with a soldering iron.

I know my luthier followed this thread to get the general idea. But the ADJ wiring is slightly different, he told me. He also consulted with a local Fender expert, and they may have figured it out. So I'm not sure if this is helpful of not? And I'm not opening up my now fixed ADJ just to find out! LOL

I've read this topic with much interest, because it sounds very familiar.

I own an American Fender Deluxe 4 string myself and have experienced the same hum issue. It is very annoying and only when I face a certain corner within my room (and only a few degrees), the hum is totally gone... I've tried other rooms as well (plugin in my bass to a small bass combo, instead of the external sound card on my computer), but everywhere is that hum again...

Took my bass to the local music store and guess what: no hum at all. However, after some urging from my side I convinced the repairer to take a look at the inside. He immediately agreed this bass wasn't shielded at all. He was willing to do this for 40 Euro and he put some kind of protecting glue at the inside and also did something with the wiring (as you probably noticed, this isn't really my field of expertise, sorry for that  ).

Now the strange thing is: a few times I was able to do recordings without having the annoying hum at all, but since a few days it's back again (like before). I didn't change anything about my setup (computer, sound card, cable, EQ of the bass itself), neither had electrical devices nearby (no lights and I even disconnected my wireless network and turned of my computer screen, without any result). All my outlets are grounded.

What bothers me most is that the problem was temporarily resolved in an inexplicable way. Perhaps something changed in the circuit of the bass? Or are there electric fields that sometimes disappear? I don't know.

I have shielded the inside of the cavity (including the pickup routes). I also shielded the back of the pickguard and the back of the control plate and made sure they both made contact with the cavity foil that is all grounded.

I've had the bass to a Fender authorized repair facility and they replaced ONE of the pickups. It helped, but when I have any of the bridge pickup in the pan knob, I get hum.

Recently my church moved to a different facility and the first service there, I brought my ADJV and it hummed so loudly I had to use my tuner to mute it between songs. We had to stop run through to try and fix it. We tried different cables, different DI's, different inputs on the board...and the hum was loud and clear.

I found a fix the next week. Play my Lakland 55-02. Used the same DI, the same cable, the same everything....dead quiet.

I know I have an issue with the pickups because I can move the bass slightly and the hum goes away or greatly diminishes. I don't know what to do. I LOVE the bass, but I can't play it anywhere without fear of hum.

I love the tone, so I really hate to change pickups, but that's the only thing left for me to do and I'm not sure what pickups sound close to the N3's which I am very pleased with.

If I were to change pups on my Am. Dlx. Jazz from the N3's, I'd go with the Fender CS60's. Next choice would be the Seymour Duncan pups.

Fender doesn't list the CS60's in a 5 string config and their website is less than helpful in determining if they are humbucking. They have the N3 and "Noiseless" listed as well as split coils, and one would assume all of them would be humbuckers, but the N3's are NOT, that's for sure.

What model of SD do you reccomend? They have a crap ton to choose from.

In the USA a wall electric outlet is supposed to have 110 V- That's not always the case though. I've seen where it can vary. I think that causes noise and hum.

If I didn't have four other basses that were completely hum free I might blame it on power.

Teri,

Hope this message finds you well. Regarding your observation about your US Jazz Bass V hum/ noise...

There is nothing wrong with the bass. With that said the N3 pickups are the main culprit. I am really not a fan of the N3 Noiseless "single coil" pickups, because firstly they are NOT noiseless and secondly they are way too too muddy for a jazz bass IMHO. I tend to swap out stock single-coil noisy pickups with Lindy Fralin, Dimarzio, Seymour Duncan etc depending on what tone I am looking for...and the result is NO noise whatsoever, passive or active. For instance I swapped out the pickups on my 2012 American Deluxe P-Bass with a Bare Knuckles '58 Split Coil at the bridge (just because I prefer the tone to the stock... not a noise issue), and the stock N3 bridge pickup with a Lindy Fralin Hum Cancelling version. My bass is now DEAD QUIET in active or passive and the Jazz bass pickup sounds like it should....awesome tone without the noise/ hum.

Some may argue, that you sacrifice "single coil tone" when installing Hum Cancelling pickups, but in the case of the stock N3 Noiseless... the replacement will be an 100% improvement.
