I'm continuing on with my quest for a quite "noiseless" bridge pickup.

I went back to where I bought the bass, and since it doesn't hum at that location, the owner (who is a great guy) said they would have no way of knowing if they fixed it since we can't reproduce the issue in their shop. I told him about this thread, and that Fender had to be aware of the issue. He suggested I call Fender.

A call to customer care got me a live person straight away. I explained the issue and he asked where I bought the bass. When I told him I was in Nashville, he immediately said, "Call Greg at Classic Ax. Take the bass, and your receipt to him. He does a lot of work for us."

So that's the next stop. Gonna drop the bass off at Classic Ax 8 blocks over on Music Row tomorrow and see what happens next.

Stay tuned....

My shielding job and adding the split coil Lindy FRalins has turned my Select into a very quiet, and very nice sounding bass.

Has anybody tried an Electro Harmonix Hum Debugger with a bass guitar?

I'm hoping after spending $1700 on a new bass, with a warranty, that I won't have to dump more money into pickups, but that's the next logical step. I hear the Frailins are nice as are the Nordys and DiMarzios.

I had a passive Jazz with DiMarzio Ultra Jazz pickups in it and they sounded great. Sad thing is, I really like the tone of the N3 pickups. They sound good active or passive.

Got an email from Fender saying that I may have a bad coil. From what I understand, the N3 pickups have a "ghost coil" that cancels the hum. So they are "single coil" pickups in the fact that there is only one coil for the magnets, but there is a secondary coil that is there for hum canceling.

Update for everyone:

Ran the bass by Classic Ax and Greg plugged it in. No hum. ARRRGH!! It's maddening. It hums so loud at my house and two of the three places I've played that it nearly drives me crazy, but the two shops I have taken it to, it won't hum.

Greg was very nice and said that he had already talked to Fender and they told him that there was a known issue with the neck pickups. The interesting thing is, the hum is coming from the bridge pickup...so I thought. When Greg told me there was an issue with some of the neck pickups, I told him that if I touch the poles on the neck pickup, the hum gets worse, but if I touch the poles on the bridge pickup, it makes no difference in the hum.

Turns out that the neck pickup may be picking up the hum and passing it to the bridge pickup some how.

At this point, everything is speculation, so I'll wait to see what Greg has to say. He strikes me as someone who is VERY good at what he does. I've heard lots of positive feedback on Classic Ax. He told me that Fender has excellent customer service and will stand behind the product.

I love the bass. Love the feel, the playability, and the tone of the pickups. If I can get rid of the hum I'll dance a jig! :)

Another update:

Greg at Classic Ax called me today and told me he is going to replace the neck pickup. Fender is sending him the part and he said I should be ready to go in the next week.

Looking forward to having my bass back. I've been playing my Lakland and as good an instrument as it is, the Fender plays better (in my opinion).

Hey Chad !! did Gregg at Classic Ax say what the issue was with regard to the neck pick up??? I'm curious as I own an 2011 American Deluxe Jazz 5 string & as I've posted ..earlier in this thread, I do get minor buzz in active mode....let us know what happens when you get your bass back. :)

He didn't say specifically what the issue was, only that there was a "known issue" with some of the neck pickups per Fender.

You sound like you have a different issue than the one I am having. I get the buzz in active or passive mode. The only thing that gets rid of the buzz is to solo the neck pickup (which is oddly the one being replaced).

I'm sure the hum issue I'm having is with my bass is mostly due to the electrical wiring in my home & the wiring in other older buildings ( over 60 yrs old) that I've played in... :)

Bass was ready Tuesday, but I was out of town and picked it up today.

The hum is MUCH better. It's now back to what I would term as "normal" hum.

My practice area is very electrically noisy. So most basses I play hum to some degree in my house. Lots of fluorescent lights, computers, cable boxes, ect in one area.

Since the pickup was replaced, I've noticed the output is better. I just can't get over how good this bass plays and sounds.

So...end result is it's not DEAD quiet, but it's much MUCH better than before. Really glad to have the bass back. As good as my Lakland is, I'm spoiled by the Am. Dlx.

While the hum is MUCH better after having the pickup replaced, I was playing this morning and the sound guy said "I'm getting noise from the bass". Since I never know how the bass is going to react with an environment, I am forced to carry a backup (which is a good idea anyway). I put my Fender away and pulled out my Lakland.

Dead quiet.....the way the good Lord intended.

Looks like I'm going to begin the quest for replacement pickups. :(

I hate that, as I love the way the N3 pickups sound.

Hmmmmmm......the N3 are nice sounding pick ups ( I love 'em in my American Deluxe Jazz 5 & I even get minor hum) but you have exhusted all avanues to remedy your hum problem with no permanent success, maybe a set of Lidy Fralin jazz pick ups will be the answer.....you'll probably want to get a set of active/passive pick ups that are similar to the N3's.
