Hey

well, as the topic says, I've got a big decision ahead lol
I would like a punchy sound for some sweet slapping. I have three candidates:

*Fender 70's Jazz Bass
*Fender Geddy Lee Jazz Bass
*Fender Deluxe Active Jazz Bass

Suggestions?

P.S. I like the fretboard of the 70's and the Geddy Lee but I like the active electronics of the Deluxe too.

Personal choice I guess but I'd go for the 70s Jazz especially if its all original.
Im a bit biased and much prefer passive. Having said that I have an active Stingray that I play.... um... never (well occasionally)

Good luck with your choice

Go with the 70's and don't look back.

Piping up to say that I played the Deluxe Active Jazz...for about 10 seconds. I knew all I needed to know about it, which was that it for sure wasn't for me. I like both the Geddy and the 70's better and between them I'd take the 70's for the rosewood neck which works well on a Jazz and I'm partial to rosewood boards. But then again, maybe the active one is just the bass you need.

What it essentially boils down to is that you need to find a way to play all three and then buy the one you like better in spite of what anyone here or on any Internet forum or gear review site says. Only you should pick your instrument and the only way to know is to try it out.

Go out and try them all!

Weirdly, I went out with our bass player a few months ago to try those exact three basses - he really wanted a Jazz, so we went on a bit of a road trip.

He tried the Geddy reluctantly, due to absolutely despising guitars with other people's signatures on them. After A/Bing them all for hours (during part of which I wandered off and ended up buying another Strat! ), after much deliberation he bought the Geddy, as it knocked the spots off the 70's reissue for his style of playing even without bringing price into the equation. I was as surprised as he was!

70's was veeeery nice though - just different, so try them all. I mean, you might even like the Deluxe Active - I suppose someone has to!

the Geddy is a good bass. I had two of them. I found I didn't like the pickups so I put Dims in them. I changed out the BA bridge on one of them and put a stock Fender bridge from that era (72) and found that the sound of the bass improved even more. They play like budda' so that in itself could be a good reason to get one. I think they should use that neck on a line of USA Jazz and Precision basses along with a standard thickness Jazz neck on Precisions. I like that idea myself.

It's so individual it's crazy. I like the Marcus Miller 4 better than 99% of the Jazzies I've owned/own (US, MIM etc) and I'm too old to care if it has a signature on it or not. Some of the signature basses are steal-deals! Many people are whining and weeping about the MM online, but mine doesn't have any of the probs they mention. Sometimes you just gotta not begin messing with the insides of a bass, if you don't know what you're doing. The Geddy Lee is a fantastic instrument, but I would always choose the MM 4 - it's sooooo individual :-)

I know this seems redundant, if it is possible just try them side by side. This will not give the real-world idea (on a gig, during a recording session, etc...), but it is a good point to start from that might eliminate one or two at that point.

The 70's bridge pick-up placement seems to favor the slap sound, but you might have a different idea in your head for other tonal uses.

With regards to active or passive...

I agree, I love passive, but I am pretty much pizzicato. Active seems to work fantastically for a slap master such as Marcus Miller and is wonderful bass. The on board instantaneous major mid scoop lends itself for that zingy/phat sound. But with the MM signature or the MIA Deluxe Jazz, you can switch it off or change the setting for a less drastic alteration of the mid-range, which drastically alters the personality on the instrument in regards to tone...which will effect how it feels.

In the end, please refer to the 1st paragraph again. Your ears will make it for you. :D
