So I recently bought a used 2008 Fender Jazz Bass MIM off of someone on Kijiji. It plays great and I have no other issues except that the A string will fall off the nut if the string is played too hard. It also falls off if I bend the string upwards.

I did a bit of research and found that other people have had this problem as well. Can anyone with experience first hand of this problem and fixed it help me figure out what I can do to solve this?

Ok, 2 things can cause this.

Firstly, what gauge strings are on there? The size of the A string may not be a good fit for the slot in the nut. This can not only cause what you describe but also crack the nut. When using over-sized strings in the E or G position it can actually break off the edge of the nut which is a common issue when using strings of a larger gauge than stock without enlarging the nut slot. The solution is to use a smaller gauge string set or to use a square nut file to enlarge the slot just a tad to accommodate the larger gauge string set.

Secondly, if the nut slot is in fact large enough there could be too many winds around the tuner post causing the angle to be inadequate for creating the downward force necessary to keep the string in the slot when playing, especially finger-style. The solution here is to remove the string from the tuner post and trim the string a bit until you have a minimum of 2 to a maximum of 3 winds around the post at pitch.
