I placed an order on one of these this morning in 3 tone sunburst (I'm talking about the Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass 70's) and later someone told me that this version is basswood, while the natural finish version is soft maple. Fender page doesn't have any info on the sunburst...just the natural finish. All stores online I see that they both have the same specs but now I am not sure...I tried cancelling my order but they still shipped me the sunburst version. I am very disappointed that they couldn't help me.

So what is it?

Thanks...fml

No wonder no one owns the sunburst version...I've only seen people with the natural finish.
Do they sound very different?

I have the maple, I never heard the basswood. I'm sure you can return it, if you haven't gotten it yet, give it a chance. A lot of people here and on other forums have no complaints about basswood.

Yeah what OXFAN said. I'd rather have a bass with a nice first quality basswood body than a third (or fourth) rate anything else. A choice basswood body can be very resonant while also being far lighter. Sometimes you have to go through 10 to get one body that really stands out. When you do it vibrates till the cows come home. On the downside, balance can be an issue with a 34" scale bass with a basswood body. You might want to post this in the Squier bass forum to get feedback from Squier players. There is nothing wrong with basswood, after all the first part of the wood's name is BASS.

I think I can't return it. I ordered form Guitar Center and it says "non-returnable item" But I'll give it a chance. Thanks for the tip.

Can a mod move this to the Squier bass forum?

I like that, BASS, first part of the name. Good one Bro. Dave. As far as the return issue, I can't see why you can't. Enlighten us if you would. I do know I have found the place to buy. Sweetwater.com.

If recommending a place is unacceptable here I apologize. I've never had a better experience than with them.

Charlez, did you catch what Bro, Dave said about going through a bunch to find the right one? You'll find if you play 10 different instruments, there will be differences in almost all of them. My #1 rule, play before you buy. I know that's not always an option, I just boughr a Strat sight unseen. I got lucky.

Hello Bats!

They said I could set up a return once I receive it, but I don't know how much the shipping would cost. I am going to give it a chance though. And yeah, trying other basses isn't an option. The music stores here (Puerto Rico) are crap.

I am actually not a bassist either, my main instrument is guitar. I was trying to find a decent "studio bass" that I could always get a good sound of for the local bands that record with me. Most of these bands play hard rock and metal, and that's why I wanted a bright sounding bass, for the "clank". I went with the word on mouth on other forums about this bass. All the clips I heard sounded great. That is how I chose it. I just didn't know that the sunburst was basswood.

ALRIGHT! Another Christmas miracle! :D That's great news, it's always good to hear this kind of result. A lot of others have praised your bass, I know my VM sounds great.

Enjoy!

I have a question I believe related to this topic. I ordered a vintage mod squire strat SSS for 224.99 from Musicians Friend. Their website states that the guitar has indian cedro body wood but Fender's website states basswood. Half of the major retailer online stores say indian cedro and the other say basswood. Anyone know for sure? I would not believe that they would offer it in both woods. Although I could be wrong.

Start a new post in the SQUIER section of the forum. People there are way more experienced and knowledgeable about Squiers than the Fender folk.
