I've found a Jazz Custom Shop Bass that I really love. Of course it comes with a pretty good price tag. I can afford it, but I don't really need it. My current bass looks, plays and sounds great, but I have fallen in love with this bass. I'm sure you guys know what I mean.

The problem is coming up with a good reason to convience my wife why I should buy this bass. We've been married 32 years and she has always stood by my side. She has never had a problem with me buying any equipment that I've NEEDED, but this bass is expensive and I really don't need it.

If any of you have ever been in the same situation and have came up with a conviencing arguement for making such a purchase, I would appreciate you sharing it with me. Maybe it'll work for me too.

Thanks in advance.
Gary

Oh okay. There is no good reason to tell a wife as to why one should buy another bass. It's never gonna happen. There will never be a good reason. Of course you could say you only have six months to live........... A voice from on high came to you and told you you should buy another bass, You think it was God........... Someone gave me this bass............ I found a bag full of money- here is a new diamond necklace and oh by the way I bought a bass......... Lester from over on S. Walabash loaned me this bass...... Oh this bass???............ I've had it a couple years!.........I found it at a rest stop.

Great ideas, but unfortunately she's a little smarter than most of those. :D

I know that's a wide open request and I probably come off sounding like a nut, but I'm really looking for some help. When I first saw the bass it said, "Hold me, Play me!!!"

I know I'm gonna pay dearly for that bass, but it'll be worth it.

I was serious about the voice from on high. It works every time.

Good ideas. I'm never against work. Does a body good, but between my regular job and the band and keeping things up around the house and grandkids :D , well not much time for a second job right now. We are far from wealthy, but money really isn't the issue. Neither of us have a problem spending money when needed, but neither of us like to spend it unnecessarily.

I can't really justify buying this bass other than I want it. At my age, 57, I figure this would probably be my last one and since we only go around once in this life, why not? But that doesn't seem to be reason enough to my wife and I can see her side of it. I guess that's why I asked if anyone has been in this situation and if so what kind of reasoning did you use.

I would sell the bass I currently use. It's a '92 MIA Jazz active 5 string in excellent condition. I am already selling an old, but good Peavey Megabass amp (500 watts) along with an 1810 Peavey speaker cabinet. All that should bring at the very least $1,200.
I'm hanging on to my '75 P-bass, which is the first bass I ever bought and my acoustic bass that I use for quiet practice.

stroker, I had to give some thought to your suggestion. I firmly believe in the man upstairs, but I don't believe in using him vainly and I don't believe he really cares that much about what bass I'm playing.
Actually I think she would just laugh at me if i tried that one! :D

Thanks for the ideas and please, keep 'em comin'.

After reading over my post on this thread, I believe I'm tryin' to justify buying the bass to myself as much or more than to my wife!

You genuinely need that bass. You are suffering from that dreaded condition, G.A.S., the only way to get rid of it is to either, A. Get it, or B. Hope someone buys it out from under you.

Voices from on high? probably aliens who just enjoy it when we do really dumb things. I liked Bro. Dave's idea about trading in others for that one. If that were an option, having your dream bass at your age would be great. I can relate.

To share my experience. I once bought something and i didn't see wifey for five days, on day six I saw her a little out of my left eye. That really didn't happen but I felt a little levity was in order

I've got one of those Jazz Plus basses(4 string). I sold it once, seriously regretted it...then was lucky enough to buy it back 8 years later. The Lace/Kubicki electronics seem to compress your playing. You'll really miss that little feature if you sell it.

Oh NO!!!! Don't tell me that.
I already regret selling a nice little Fender hybrid bass I once had. I sold it after I bought the '92 Jazz. It had the best tone of any bass that I've owned and was super easy to play.
I wasn't playing it very much after buying the 5 string and a young bass player I knew wanted it really bad. I thought it was too good of a bass to set around not getting played, so I made the kid a very good deal on it.

oxfan, if I didn't see her for a few days I would begin to worry. I might not see it comin'! Oh and the G.A.S. thing. She says I'm full of the stuff that perfumiates (real word that I made up) the G.A.S.!

brotherdave, I tried the voices thing once. She said the few little voices in my head were out voted by the many big voices in her head!

Dude no vain intent what so ever. I think God may have a sense of humor though. I was in no way serious that you tell your wife that God told you to buy a bass. I think it would be funny if you did. That's it. Sorry if you are offended in any way .

I think God wants you to have a bass,

Psalm 37

1Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.

2For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb.

3Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.

4Delight thyself also in the LORD: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

5Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.

6And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday.

No way did I take offense to your post and I didn't mean it to come off sounding that way. It would kind of be funny if I tried that, at least right up until the fryin' pan made contact! :D
And your right, God does have a sense of humor. You oughta see a picture of me!

Thanks oxfan. I can't argue with that.

I'll think about this a few more days. Thanks for everyone's input, it has helped.

Merry Christmas to all!

Well, I just ordered the bass! They'll have it in my hands by Friday, in time for our New Year's gig!
It's a Fender Custom Shop Custom Classic Jazz Bass V Special with the Violin Burst finish.

Here's a couple of pictures from Sweetwater. I'll post some again Friday after I get it.

NICE -

What arrangements did you have to do in order to get it ordered? What trades did you decide on, if I may ask...

Thanks.
