Why did Fender drop the 62 concentric volume/tone, volume/tone in favor of volume, volume, tone configuration?

Cost in parts and labor plus ease of use are probably the reasons. There is absolutely nothing tonally faulty with the '62 stacked knob design in functional use but it does have a slight learning curve compared to the V/V/T arrangement and is more costly in parts and more labor intensive in manufacture. I like both designs fine.

I much preferred the look of the stacked knobs and thought functionality was better too however I bought a 62 reissue a while back (new) and had no end of problems with crackle from the knobs...
So I sold it.

Was that a Japanese one?

Yes it was, had a great neck but the pots were questionable and the body developed crazing inside 12 months.

Jaco supposedly switched out to the VVT layout because he felt the volume was lacking somewhat. Maybe extra resistance? Don't know but I thought it is a cool concept. It also is how my two active basses have their treble/bass controls.

USA Vintage '62 Jazz Basses are also available with a 3-knob setup.

Aw you should have had the pots replaced with decent CTS ones ($5 each) and the body crazing actually would be cool. The Japanese crafted necks are some of the best out there.

I'm lucky to run across this thread because I just built (re: assembled) a jazz bass and I'm contemplating using a concentric stacked system. I've done it before using CTS pots and I had no problems at all with static or crackling. I'm using Fralins (not humbucking). It's good to read what others are thinking about the concentric stack. I also wondered why it was only a one year deal....
