Hey,

I have an L series jazz (early 65), red with matching headstock... well the body was refinished in the early 70's Im guessing due to it now being a natural finish - and really bad at that. However the headstock wasnt refinished and still retains its original color albeit very worn and faded as this is an extremely worn bass. I have decided to get the body refinished in its original color, maybe with a relic to match the headstock but Im unsure of the actual color due to fade/wear. It seems to match Dakota red more than Fiesta but I cant be sure. Someone even said it was Candy Apple. My question - is there a record of colors based on the serial number that I can refer to?

Thanks

If you disassemble your Jazz Bass you may find more-pristine examples of the instrument's original color within the body routs or the neck pocket -- that may make matching the original painted headstock a bit easier.

Took your advice and pulled it apart and surprise - the color was there! They didnt even bother to take the scratch plate off...

Still a bit confused as to what actual color it is so I added some pics to see what you guys think... I know its hard to read the neck date but its '64.

I also have the original p/ups in good nick, i think these are '72s, not sure.

Too bright to be Dakota Red IMO -- I'd call it Fiesta.

But wait until the oxfan and brotherdave weigh in. They're really knowledgeable about Fender basses.

Here's another site with lots of info.
http://home.provide.net/~cfh/fenderc.html

It looks like the color chart information that will help you is located a little over half way down the page.

Hope this helps.

Agree that it is probably Fiesta Red. I'm pretty sure based on the photo and my monitor here. This body should be refinished to match the headstock. There are two people I know who can do a refinish on this Pre-CBS bass and get it right. Curtis Novak in NC USA and Gord Miller in Canada.

Thanks heaps guys, Im convinced of Fiesta also. Would love to get it refnished in the USA but I am in Australia unfortunately. I will be going for a fairly heavy relic to match the headstock. Will post pics when its done to see what you guys think. Thanks heaps for your advice.

One other question - I have always belived this is a '65 Jazz based on the serial number (L58107) but the neck and pots date '64. Which year should I be quoting by?

I don't know if it is possible or if you would even consider it? But to keep what is left of the original colour and to keep the integrity of the colour that has not been stripped.Have your restorer look into blending the existing Fiesta red into one another.Just a thought.

Lovely Bass

The serial does date to 1965 model year, but there are irregularities. What is the neck date and what are the pot code?

The neck dates 7 Oct 64 (the 64 has almost faded away but you can just see it), I will have to get back to you on the pots as they are with the body (restorers) but Im almost certain they are 64 also.
I will be changing back to the original pups which are '65s, add these dates to the serial number and its quite confusing...
