I have a Squier J-bass that I got new just two years ago. In that time, I've had to get the action adjusted (strings lowered) at least three times. Each time has been done by a professional at Guitar Center, but he said the last time that I shouldn't have to keep doing it. I just did it now myself with an allen wrench after months of non-use.

I'm not sure if it did much, but the frets buzz near the top. I give up - do I just have a busted bass?

Seasonal truss rod adjustments are to be expected now and then. Otherwise unless you change string sets you should not be visiting the tech more than about twice per year for very minor adjustments. As Wong said about one-quarter turn of the truss rod should be all that is required.

It is wise to take it to a good bass tech to get it adjusted but sometimes that good bass tech is not going to be working at a Guitar Center. If you have any connections in the local music community ask around for a good bass tech. Sometimes a truly great guitar tech and a truly great bass tech are two different things. I know one store with a great guitar tech that can make a guitar play and sound amazing, but when it comes to setting up a bass to play well finger-style he's probably the last person I'd recommend.

Usually when a person sets up their bass themselves they tend to make the neck too straight with too little relief. As Wong mentioned that is what has apparently happened to yours. It needs more relief.

Unless you are changing to a different string set, only very minor adjustments should ever be required. Which brings up the point that you should find one set of strings you like best on that instrument and stick to that set instead of changing brands or sets all the time. It will make your life much easier. Also keep the instrument in a controlled environment and avoid temperature extremes, like leaving it in the car for days in either July or January or storing it in a damp basement.

Newer instruments often need adjusting more frequently until they "settle in" which doesn't take but a month or two of steady use. I have one bass I've not had to tweak one bit in 6 years. It varies. But if you avoid frequent string set changes and don't leave it anywhere you'd be uncomfortable yourself, then you should be making far fewer truss rod tweaks.
