Gibson makes an Alex Lifeson signature guitar and it costs thousands. Why can't we get a Geddy Lee Jazz Bass that is American Made?

I have 2 American made Jazz basses & 2 Japanese made Jazz basses ( a Geddy Lee jazz bass & a Marcus Milller Jazz bass as well as a Steve Harris P-bass) And I have to say that I find them to be on par with American made Fender Basses.

This has been my experience with regard to comparing MIA & MIJ basses & if you google the web you'll find people out here who insist that the MIJ models are superior.

Don't forget that when Fender was re-tooling their operations in the early 80's the exec's
went to Japan & were blown away with regard to how much better & superior the japanese knock off models were compared to their own american made guitars & Basses,
thus was the beginning of Fender Japan.

At the end of the day though it comes down to personal preference & I have to say I love my MIA basses as much as my MIJ basses......I do however have to say that I'm on the fence with regard to MIM fenders..........at the moment anyway.

The Cherry Red Trans Geddy Lee FMT was USA-made.

It's a Custom Shop creation specially commissioned by the famed Rush bassist/vocalist for the band's most recent tours. This bass is tuned Eb-Ab-Db-Gb and lacks off a pickguard.

Yeah thats a nice one, he uses it for one song in concert , he also has 2 black Custom Shop Jazz basses( used earlier this year on their Time Machine tour), 1 bass has a pearl pick guard & 1 has a Toritise shell pick guard ( both basses have pearl block neck markers...) I wish all 3 of these Custom shop beauties were available.

I just found a picture from one of these custom shop beauties as used during the 2010 Time Machine tour. Has that gorgeous alchemical "Amalgamation" symbol engraved on the pearloid guard!

Yeah that's one of 'em....Beautiful bass, love the matching pearloid pickguard & block markers & the alchemical Amalgamation symbol is a nice touch along with the Badass 2 bridge.......I think the pick ups on these basses were modifified for enhanced low end?

I'm not sure what machine head tuners are equipt on this bass? I do know that his Jazz bass with the tortise shell pick guard has Hipshot tuners with a drop D tuner on the E string.......nice basses, thanks for the picture (great live shot) :D

Geddy occasionally uses a Jaco tribute fretless bass (Malignant Narcissism from the trio's 2007 album Snakes and Arrows.)

Yeah I saw him use the Jaco bass on the Snakes 'n' arrows tour & I saw him use the 2 Black Custom shop basses on the most recent Time Macine tour ( in Vancouver BC, on June 30th the tour ended two nights later at The Gorge in Washington state).... I have a Jaco Fretless Bass (Artist series.. not Custom shop.still MIA) this is a sweet playing bass I love the neck on this bass & the growl of the Vintage Jazz pickups Ahhhhhh!! incredible!!!

I played one of those beaten up Jaco tributes at my local music store.....I have to say that it played nice but I preffered the unbeaten up version that I have,...just my opinion
I feel the same regarding the road worn series basses.....some feel good while others are so so or in need of adjustment.....it's so individual.
By the way Great Geddy Pictures yet again......

Geddy's name is without doubt associated with the classic Rickenbacker bass, the 4001. Cliff Burton and Chris Squire are his main influences. He also uses 4080 doublenecks in many occasions.

Geddy favored Wal basses (and more specifically the Mach 1) from 1985 to 1992.

why an American made GL Jazz?? i find the build quality of my existing GL J superior to any existing Am J made except for maybe the Am deluxe...and i think the existing GL has a bit better attention to detail on the neck binding than the existing Am Del....

if it ain't broke.... don't fix it.....

USA-made GL Jazzes are Custom Shop creations made for Geddy himself.

I couldn't agree with you more Kgerry, & as I posted earlier in this thread the MIJ Geddy Lee Jazz Bass is an exellent instument & consistant too.
Everytime I walk into a Long & McQuade music store here in Vancouver I'll pick up a Geddy Lee Bass to see how it plays & feels ( I have a 2006 Geddy Lee) & I gotta say the workmanship on this model (as well as the Marcus Miller bass) is consistant,
& during a conversation about Jazz basses 6 months ago,... the Sales guy at L & M told me that the Geddy Lee & Marcus Miller are 2 of Fenders top selling basses
(maybe if someone from Fender reads this they could verify if this is indeed true)

& as I've said I find these basses to be on par with MIA Jazz & Precision basses. :)
anyway That's been my experience.

This bass looked very much to one of the two Custom Shop Jazz Basses Geddy used for the 2010 Time Machine tour. Geddy's bass had pearloid blocks on the fretboard and a black finish.

Nonetheless this battered sunburst 72 Jazz served as a basis for the sunburst MIJ Artist Signature series introduced 3 years ago. :)
