Hi,

I'm having some issues with my 2010 MIM Fender Jazz Bass Deluxe V. When I'm finger playing more aggressively, I will sometimes pull/ pluck the strings so hard that they touch on the pickup magnets and make a big pop noise through the amp and PA live. Is there any way to resolve this without lowering the pickup or playing less aggressively? Maybe different pickups I could throw on it to prevent this?

Thanks

NO. You could play like a wuss but why do that? Lower the pole piece or get Pickups that have flush pole pieces but they still have to be low enough not to hit them. Either way the whole deal is to not hit the poles. Of course there are other ways I'm sure someone knows of. Maybe put tape over the poles. Some lame -o suggested that on here once. If you put tape over the poles other bass players will laugh at you when you're not looking. If you are fried enough to put tape on poles you may be eligable to play in the band I'm in.

Just lower the pickup a bit. Problem solved, zero expense.

@stroker vance: Yeah, I threw some tape over them to get through a recording session and I felt dumb enough doing that. I'll have to see if there is a way I can lower the pole pieces, but I might end up getting some different pickups...

@brotherdave: How much tone/ attack will I lose if I lower them though?

Actually you may get better tone and sustain. If the pickups are too close to the string the magnetic pull from the poles will actually deaden the strings and stifle the tone. Moving the pickups away from the strings a tiny bit isn't going to matter much at all signal strength wise. I know that some people think having the pickups as close as possible to the strings is a good idea when in reality often it is a terrible idea.

Brother Dave is right. I need a bumper sticker with that on it. I'd put it on my one guitar case.

And how did that go Bassasin31 at the world's longest rehearsal?

I don't know if I had the pickup level to the strings, but my G string didn't seem to have any sustain at all compared to before.... Just have to keep playing with it I guess.

you could always raise the pickup cover instead of lowering the poles. I have done that before by putting a spacer inside on top of the flatwork then put the cover back on. Then you may only have to lower the pickup just a little. That may help the G thing.

Take two nickles. Stack them. With the G string fretted at fret 12 will the nickles fit between the pickup poles and the string? If not the pickup could still be too close.
