Hey all,

I recently bought a 5-string American Deluxe Jazz Bass V, and I've been getting a clacking noise which I believe to be the sound of the string hitting the fretboard. This is the 3rd bass that I've owned, and the first one to give me this problem. While I could see this being an issue with the B-string, I actually get the sound out of all the strings, no matter what end of the neck I play. I've tried raising the action, turning down the treble on my bass and amp, and changing the strings. Now generally, I play harder music and tend to strike the strings pretty hard. I've tried playing softer, and that only helps a little. Like I said, I've had other bassists, and I've never really had to adjust my technique, (at least not for this reason).

Does anyone have any advice or has anyone else come across the same problem? Please help me out.

-Phil

definitely sounds like a truss rod problem to me. my MIM V does that periodically and a few tweaks on the rod straightens it right out. if you haven't adjusted a truss rod before take it to the shop and let them do it and show you how--it doesn't take much

DO NOT mess with your truss rod.
If you bought the bass used, it may have Stainless steel strings on it; SS is clacky compared to nickel. No adjustments will relieve that problem if it's the strings, change strings so that you'll know what type are on there.
Otherwise the clackiness will reduce over time, either incorporate it into your style, EQ it out, or adjust your attack style to minimize it.

Fender may even ship with SS on some models? maybe?
