Can anyone give me info on the American Jazz Bass. I'm mainly wanting to know what separates it from the jazz basses in lower quality. I know this is a pretty broad question that bass players find obvious, please excuse my noobishness. I play guitar (mostly GIbson, I know, boo me) But in my search for a bass I'm really liking the American Standard Jazz Bass, I just like to know if there is a lesser known model that is just as good for a cheaper price. But if the American Standard is worth the price (From the ones I've played I think it is) then I have no problem putting out the money for it.

The American Standard series has better quality wood, electronics and hardware than lesser models such as the American Special, Highway One or the MIM/CIJ instruments. The neck is also built more durably with graphite reinforcement and more attention is given the fret finishing. Whether or not the body finish is better is debatable but I think the USA finishes do actually look better than all but the CIJ's which also have excellent finishing. Additionally you get the much better hardcase included. I prefer a passive instrument, so I'd buy the American Standard even over the Deluxe model, but I'd also consider the American Vintage '62 Jazz Bass because of the stacked pot setup and the included pickup/bridge covers.

With just about any lesser instrument you are probably going to be wanting to do upgrades to get better tone or improve playability, but with the American Standard or an American Vintage model you can usually play it as it is without even thinking about an upgrade.

Thank you. Sounds like the American Standard is the best bass for the value. I think I'm going to pick one up at a local store within the next week or two. Thanks for your help.

Post-2006 Hwy 1s and US Special basses feature those graphite neck reinforcements.

But Face, they don't have the same quality wood in the neck or in the body for that matter.

Later!

Thanks for the help guys. I went to my local shop yesterday and bought a three tone USA standard with a rosewood board. They didn't have any in stock but they said it should be here this week. I'm really excited to get my hands on my first bass.

In general, the entire range of the American Standard line is head and shoulders above everything else save for the Deluxe, Reissues, and Custom Shop models (and even at that, they still may prove to be the best value period).

I have an 01 3 tone SB with rosewood just like what you bought. It's a great bass and sounds better with stock parts than my other bunch of Jazz's. I got lucky with it. It sounds a little better than the Ash Jazz I had too. I get people coming up at gigs(with the Jazz SB) , commenting etc. So it's a good choice for you. Plus a sunburst is usually not hard to sell if you need to. Next is: don't hack all over the truss rod and whatnot! HA!
