I was just about to ask the same question.

I have a jaco Fretless. I love the feel of the bass but the pick ups sound thin to me. I've tried it through a few different amps and I've messed with the hight but it still sounds weak and it buzzes like hell when I play it at volume.

I'm thinking of changing the pick ups but I'm not sure what to go for. I'm not bothered about the ''classic''/''vintage sound''. I don't even know what that is TBH . It seems like a bit of a myth. I just want something with a decent output and a good range. I was thinking of a set of those Nordstand pups. It feels like a bit of a lottery buying pups. I don't want to spend a load of cash on a set that don't sound that different to the fenders.

Any ideas or opinions?

Gaz

Sounds to me like the bass isn't setup right or is wired incorrectly (depending on what you mean by "buzz"). A Jazz Bass shouldn't sound "weak" with anybody's pickups in it, and it certainly shouldn't buzz through an amp.

I'd have it really checked by a good tech before I started swapping pickups.

yeah - 'What Jim said"
Does sound like some trouble somewhere perhaps, BUT you must know that watts and volts alike a fretless version of any bass model seems to lose a lot of volume compared to the fretted IMHO. My favorite bass I own and gig with is a defretted American 5 string jazz that I had put an Aguilar preamp and then took the Aggie out and passively rewired it in this manner: 1 volume 1 tone and bridge pickup only using a Fender noiseless 5 string p/up, 2 250 pots and a .1 capacitor on the tone. It is tops. And I play it through a Bassman 60 watt at the house or as a monitor through the PA (it has DI out) or through Fender's Pro 800 (1200 watts @ 2 ohm load) for my large church gig. And it ain't weak, but does have less volume than the fretted version at the same settings, all things equal. Starting with a technical inspection of your bass's current state of health there may still be some issues to address depending much on your definition of a "good fretless sound" - and there are several different tones you may be searching for.
Enjoy the journey - it is often more enjoyable than the destination. :)
I hope this all helps some.
