The 2-octave Jazz Bass came initially in Cherry and Tobacco Sunburst finishes.

The Cherry Sunburst model lasted only 2 years; Fender dropped this colour option in 2007. Flat Black didn't came into surface until 2008.

As far as I know only the 4-string model was available in Cherry Sunburst as Fender never produced the Jazz Bass 24 V in that colour.

The 2-octave Jazz Basses were gone from the Fender pricelist as of 2009.

I think his is a tobacco burst?

You're quite correct about the 5-string 2-octave Jazz, this bass was offered only in tabacco sunburst and flat black - not to mention a small batch of cherry sunburst 5-stringers produced only a few months before this colour option being dropped from the Fender pricelist.

I have another question. I was wondering if I got the Jazz Bass 24, could I just grab the pickups, preamp, pots and knobs from the USA Deluxe Jazz and just install it into the 24? That way I can have what I like about the USA Deluxe Jazz inside the body off the 24 Jazz.

You must have enough skills to perform this job.

The USA Deluxes feature an 18V supply.

Eventually you can keep the Basslines humbuckers with the slap-cut switch and just upgrade the preamp, however I'm afraid if there's enough room in the back rout to install a pair of 9V batteries.

I could always pay to expand the battery compartment to be able to accomodate two batteries. My only dilemma is finding someone who's selling a black Jazz 24 4 stringer. Haggling will also be a problem too. ;p

Take a look on eBay, I'm pretty sure you'll certainly find a used flat black two-octave Jazz Bass in a mint condition. Happy bidding! :P

Despite the complaints about the Jazz 24, I think this bass might be a real winner for me although some work needs to be done to it to incorporate what I like about the USA deluxe jazz into this bass. Another feature I really like about the Jazz 24 is the way the controls are set out. It's not all crammed up like the traditional Jazzes. So what I'm planning to do if I do get this bass is just switch out all the electronics and replace them with the USA Deluxe Jazz electronics and pickups, get a double battery box installed and replace the mid slap switch with the active/passive toggle. Maybe I might put a badass or a HMV bridge. I may also need to add a pickguard as I am primarily a pick player, but I can use my fingers as well. How does that all sound?

Just thought I'd mention that my friend's Deluxe 24 was retrofitted with J-Retro preamp.

Which J Retro preamp is he using? The preamps seem to only fit the Jazzes with the controls in the traditional location.

I don't know. The previous owner had performed the mod; I'll see if I can find out from him this Sunday.

Can you post a couple of photos? This might be helpful.

Another problem! As I was thinking of putting the USA Deluxe jazz preamp into the Jazz 24 control cavity, I realised, wouldn't the pot shafts be a bit too short to go through the pot holes? If they are short, is there a way to extend them, or do I have to look for an alternative?

That's why I said you must have enough skills to do that job thyself, you fool!

Nonetheless, you should now contact a professional luthier in order to install the USA Deluxe's preamp properly.

Ahh, I'm sorry for not realising that sooner. Looks like this won't be much of a DIY project. =[
But thanks for telling me beforehand so I don't screw up an expensive job (for me anyways) by doing everything myself.

My bad, it's not the J, but rather the U Retro pre-amp.
