I was planning on buying a Fender American Deluxe Jazz Bass, but I noticed it only has 21 frets. I would like to have it in 24 frets. If I wanted this, would I have get a custom shop jazz bass made? I wanted everything to be the same, just with 24 frets instead of the 21.

I believe that Fender makes a 24 fret Jazz Bass. At least they did a couple of years ago. That was one of the things that prevented me from buying a Fender in the past. Then a few years ago I said to myself that if Fender made a 6 string bass with 24 frets I would buy one. Then low and behold the Steve Bailey 6 came out for a couple of years and I got lucky enough to buy one.

The "Fender Deluxe Jazz Bass 24" model was a 34 inch scale active Jazz with 24 frets. Made in Korea though. Really nice with active SD pickups. It was discontinued a while back. It was gorgeous, had no pickguard and separate bass, mid and treble I think. I played one and it really sounded amazing.

The American Deluxe was a 22-fretter for nearly 15 years.

Apparently Fender decided to cheap the whole series to cut production costs and save money.

In that case get one of the Zon Michael Manring Hyperbasses. Granted it is fretless it also has a 3 octave fingerboard. And if that still isn't enough there are at least 5 ways to change tunings on it to get those higher notes.

To the OP. Try getting an American Deluxe 5 and putting a high C string on it. Then the G that would be the note at the 24th fret on the g string would be at the 19th fret on the C string. That should give you the extra notes that you would have with a 24 fret 4 string, and then some.

I know what you're saying. Even though I love my Fender my 2 other dream basses are either a Warwick Thumb Bass 6-string, or a Fordera Anthony Jackson Presentation Contrabass Guitar. I think the Warwick would be the most affordable option but I'm still dodging bill collectors.

If you really deadset on 22+ frets, you might consider getting a fingerboard extension, which would be a piece of wood shaped to the same radius as the existing neck. Even if you play fretless, this is a good solution that I think any qualified luthier could pull off, and probably for a lot less than you'd pay for a custom shop bass: http://www.warmoth.com/Guitar/necks/Fre ... sions.aspx

So does that mean I have to make do with 21 frets on that bass then? I'm not a big fan of fretboard extensions. I would like the neck to be like the neck on the Jazz bass deluxe 24, just one piece of wood without the hanging bit of fret board. I don't really care if I have to move the bridge closer towards the neck, but can this be done or does this look like a custom shop bass? I also would like the neck to not have those ridiculous block inlays. They confuse me.

You wont have to move the bride at all and I don't think* that you would have to move the neck pickup closer to the bridge either. If you really want a 24-fret Jazz, you'll have to either hunt for a used one (check out talkbass.com), build one (Warmoth), try another brand or if you have your heart set on a Fender (and it's in your means to do so) - contact the Custom Shop.

*I have not verified this.

The flat black models with their matching headstocks and hardware looked gorgeous.

The 2-octave Jazz Bass came initially in Cherry and Tobacco Sunburst finishes.

The Cherry Sunburst model lasted only 2 years; Fender dropped this colour option in 2007. Flat Black didn't came into surface until 2008.

As far as I know only the 4-string model was available in Cherry Sunburst as Fender never produced the Jazz Bass 24 V in that colour.

The 2-octave Jazz Basses were gone from the Fender pricelist as of 2009.

Yeah, I've now got my heart set on the Jazz Bass 24 fret, but it's as rare as rocking horse $@!&. I figured the American Deluxe Jazz was too expensive and I'm not satisfied with the 21 frets and the block inlays. In case you've all been wondering why I wanted a 24 fret, it was because I learnt to play bass on a 24 fret bass and basses with 20 or 21 frets feel alien to my hands and although I may not even go up to the 24th fret, having 20 frets makes me feel limited it's like I feel as though I'm running out of neck to play on. I've always loved and admired the Fender Jazz bass sound as well as it's looks. I think it's tops. The only thing that appealed to me on the American Deluxe Jazz was the Active/Passive toggle switch, which I figured I could mod the Jazz 24 with if I ever get one.

I prefer 21 and 22-fret basses.

20 frets are too insufficient in my taste for playing complex bass lines.

I never liked the full 2-octave 4-string bass guitars, though I consider 2-octave fingerboards more suitable for exotic-wood ERBs with custom-wound soap-bars and active electronics.
