I'd like to see a Jazz bass option on the "standard" models like so:

knob 1) volume
knob 2) pickup pan
knob 3) tone or a wide sweep boost/cut, or even a up/down choice for series/parallel.

Just a thought.

Sorry had to edit as this danged old laptop I'm on has a pad that sticks and it posted BLANK the first time.

The Vol/Vol/Tone arrangement was settled upon as the best possible arrangement with a passive Jazz after numerous other arrangements were prototyped. I myself have tried Master Volume/Pickup Pan/Tone and I found that it diminished the overall output substantially by loading down the circuit. The instrument was much louder with either pickup soloed and contrary to what you'd expect did not get louder as the Vol/Vol/Tone arrangement does. On actives the preamp compensates, but on passives the best tonal and output arrangement is Volume/Volume/Tone.

Of course you can wire it up anyway you want and see for yourself. About the only tonal arrangement you can get on a passive is a treble bleed to ground. You can do the Grease-Bucket mod but I don't like that as well myself as it seems to restrict tonal colors and make the instrument sound less versatile to me. Your mileage may vary.

I'm not an electrician so I've never understood why the situation exists as you describe it on a passive bass. That being said, if you have one of the newer American Deluxe Jazz basses with the active bypass, what happens to the functionality of the pan knob in passive mode?

To quote Marc Noel-Johnson of "DV Magazine" in his review on what happens, "The pan pot is curious in that the center position acts like a high-pass filter with the net result being that you cannot have both pickups on at the same time – it’s either the neck or the bridge."

My assessment would be similar but his phrasing is better. There is very little "play" or what I like to call "coloring" in this pan control in either passive or active. It is very touchy on the two I've tried.

I've not noticed the pan problem you mention on my Fender Jazz active. I usually have mine set midway up or down between the pickups and I feel that I get a good blend. I'm sure at some point that one pickup drops off completely as you approach 100% on the other.
