Hey All,

I was wondering if anybody could help me. I have an old photo (which I will post later) of a bass my dad used to have back in the 80s. It is a Fender Jazz Bass. The color is white (or a shade of white) and it has a white pick guard. It also has what appears to be a maple neck, with white square inlays. It had the big "F" cover covering the bridge and bridge pick up. It also had the cover over the neck pick up. I am guessing it is a 70's model, but I'm not sure. I no longer have the bass, due to reasons beyond my control, but I would love to find one just like it. I have searched photos online and have not been able to find one just like it. I'm wondering if it was modified, or rare. Anybody got any feedback.

I know it sucks without the pic. I'll post it later when I get home.

Rock on!!

It sounds like a typical 70's model jazzbass with white binding and blocks, many people remove the chrome covers that are over the bridge and pickups so thats not out of the ordinary.
But the bass itself should'nt be hard to narrow down, but a pic would be helpful to get the exact year and options either stock or aftermarket.

It almost looks like an Antigua. Maybe?

That was my thought as well.

Looks like a late 70's Jazz from the headstock logo, MOP inlays and the knobs. If those are the stock knobs, in the late 70's they used Strat type knobs.

It defiantly looks like a Antigua finish, very cool!

I'm agreeing that in the photo it does look like an Antigua finish. If you look at the pickguard next to the 4th (E) string there does appear to be the total characteristic shading between the first pickguard screw and the thumbrest. This characteristic alone is enough to make me 99% sure it is Antigua finished. This was a custom color with an interesting history. Antigua was first introduced on the Coronado hollowbody instruments to minimize visual imperfections in the body binding on the early Coronados. Fender eventually made it a legitimate color option on solid body instruments as well. It is considered to be one of the more rare custom colors and thus it costs more to buy one today than it would a Candy Apple Red which while still scarce is still more plentiful than Antigua. The pickguards on these are nearly impossible to replace accurately. Take very good care of an antigua pickguard.

That's certainly a dead ringer for the OP's vintage photograph.

Mystery solved!

Thank's guys!! I definitely appreciate the feedback. Since then, I have found a few photos of the Antigua bass online, not very many though. I had not seen brotherdave's photo, but it is nice. I saw that one sold on eBay a while back for about $2500. Ouch.
I also contacted a Fender Custom Shop authorized dealer to see if they could replicate this bad boy. The guy is supposed to contact me back with a more accurate quote, but he did say it would probably be no less that 4 Gs, if possible. Hmmm.
I'll continue scanning eBay, maybe I'll get lucky.

One other question, maybe you guys know. Why is it that the thumb rest is found in the position shown in both of the photos on this chain, but can also be found on the bottom of the strings? That makes no sense to me.

Thanks again dudes.

In the early '70s, Fender re-located the "tug-bar" from below the strings to above in order to satisfy players' demands for this change. I believe it was implemented in 1973.
