Around the central Carolinas a 78 Jazz would retail for $2000 to right at $3000. You can expect slightly less because the case is trashed up pretty good. The bass itself looks 7.5 to 8.0. Only going by the photos and they are often deceiving. Also I don't know if that was the original finish or not. My estimate is for everything including the finish to be original, including the solder joints. I'm deducting about 300 dollars for the damage to the case.

Nice bass,The way the economy is terrible as of now I would think BroDave's numbers on it are correct but the hard part is finding someone who will pay that price.
I would have to say it would go for about 1650.00-1800.00$ and tops 2000.00$ IN MY OPINION,I try to stay up on all the prices and my estimate is'nt etched in stone but I feel it is close to what that model, finish, condition and its demand is going for.
I hope I'm wrong and you make a small fortune off of it,and I must say I hate the "STRAT" style vol/tone nobs(nothing to do w/yur bass, its just a "new look"they tried and I think its not a good one(they musta too,it barely lasted a few yrs.)again nicer bass.
G/LUCK!

I just returned from the music store and have discovered the following things about this bass: it needs new strings, a nut because the nut slots have been filed a little too much, a new output jack, and the bridge cover is missing.

It is all original and he said it was in vg++ condition. I'm just going to leave it as is and let someone else complete any maintenance or cleaning. I'm going to put it on auction for 10 days beginning at $1700. Do you guys think that is about right given everything I've discovered so far?

What evidence is there that that is really from '78? Other than the serial number which is known to be vague.

There's alot of things if you KNOW what to look for,Pots and dated, serial number, solder joints tampered with, neck markings, body routes,pick-ups,wood used ETC....some of these have numbers too look for, some are features that were model/year specific YADA YADA,once you have been around a bit one would at least know where to start and where to go if perticular things dont add up.
Its not that easy to make a fake thats TOTALLY PASSABLE,and if so thats not the bass to spend the time, effort and money to do that(its a great vintage bass, but not the most desired)an older jazzbass (pre-CBS)or a older p-bass are the two that come too mind.

I am well aware of all that. Jazz basses with serial numbers like that may be as late as 1983. That's why I asked for further evidence.

Actually it is most likely either 77 or 78.
But without neck code and pot codes won't know for 100% sure.
I personally know of no instance where a S8 serial dated out as late as 1983, but anything is possible such as a neck swap, however by 1981 Fender totally abandoned the 3-bolt neck plate. So I'm pretty sure it is pre-81.
Fender lists that serial as 1977 or 1978.
Guitar Dater Project lists it as a 1977 or 1978.
Could be a 77, but isn't later than 80.
Would sure like the neck and pot codes so I can decode them.

I have the guitar on ebay right now. My car is in the shop today so sometime this week, ..I can take it to a guitar expert and have them remove the neck. I saw a guy do this once on antiques roadshow and it didn't seem to be that big of a deal. However, I'm not going to do that since I haven't a clue what I'm doing.
The screws on every piece of hardware look as if they have never been touched..or at least not for a long time. There is some light corrosion on those screws so I thought it was best if the new owner could see that. exactly the condition as I got it. I like uncovering a history of an item as I clean it..or research it...especially if I'm going to keep it. The guy at the music store where I took it and I are of the opinion that its original.
Lots of interest so far..11 watchers as of this am. Wish I had a a couple more of these to sell.

Everything about your bass looks legitimate to me.
I know it is impossible to be sure but your bass has all of the unique characteristics of a 1977- 78 Jazz bass.
The tuners are correct. The finger rest is on the bass and in the right location.
The body wood is ash and relatively well matched on the body.
The pickguard is black which is correct for '77 -78. All Fender guitars made in those years had black pick guards.

It too bad that the case got crunched!

It appears to be a very clean example of a late 70's Jazz bass.
Good luck with your auction

A '78 Olympic White Jazz recently ended on eBay at $1775, which did not meet reserve. The seller had a $3000 buy it now price set on it. It wasn't any nicer than yours and the bridge cover was also missing and one pickup had been rewound. But the case was possibly in better shape. Don't give up as you have 3 days to go! In my experience the bids don't come until the closing moments! Good luck with it. I think it is a more than fair starting bid. You would get more bids with a lower opening bid, but then there is the danger of getting less than you wanted. A too low opening bid on a vintage instrument with no reserve it is sort of a two edge sword that cuts both ways. Having your auction end Sunday evening is also smart. I have done better on eBay auctions ending on Sunday afternoons and evenings than any other time.
