I always was a huge Sting/Police fan. That is one of the reasons why another was because I really loved the sound of Verdine White's bass playing and he was a Jazz player. I have come to love the Jazz so much I am giving my custom made Precision to my son for his 14th Birthday this week.

I wanted to play bass since I saw Steve Harris run around the stage and 'shooting' his bass towards the crowd in Long Beach Arena during the World Slavery Tour. Alas my small hands prevented me to play the P in the beginning. Learning the bass was easier with the J neck. So my 1st Fender was an '89 Power Jazz Bass Special, with both the P and J pups  Best of both worlds. In the 23 yrs or playing and 30+ basses later, it seems I've always comeback to Fender - and I never sold the '89. I do have a project P right now tho. I've gone thru 34" and 35" scale basses, no issues with my small hands. I just have the soft spot for the J now :)

Uhhhh. While a Jazz isn't the first thing that comes to mind when you think Sting instruments, he did play a 60's Jazz early on.

BUT that wasn't the only bass he was seen with prior to the 54 P- Bass, Ibanez Musician Bass:

Image

Before that he liked a Spector NS:

OK here he is kicking it Old-School:

AND going EVEN OLDER SCHOOL:

So he isn't locked into one type of instrument.

Even though I love modern tone/techniques (Slap/Pop, Tapping, Chords, Harmonics etc.) active electronics, round wound strings, effects, loops etc. I consider my style to be traditional in the Jamerson, Anthony Jackson, Phil Lesh, Berry Oakley, Jacl vain with all of those other things hung on it. I've always loved the tone of Fender Jazz and Fender Jazz influenced basses (Sadowskys etc.). I always said that if Fender made a Six String Jazz Bass with 24 frets I would get one. Low and behold Fender came out with the Steve Bailey Jazz Bass VI with 24 frets. I also got lucky and ordered one just before Steve went over to Warwick (my other dream axe is a Six String Thumb Bass).

Stay Brown,
Rev J

for me as much as I love my 2 lefty MIM Fender jazz basses,
I bought Jazzes only because I can never find lefty Fender Precision's.....

That being said, I would still want a Jazz in the house as long as it's a Fender.

I remember the bass-line John Paul Jones did 'Whole Lotta Love' live on the Song Remains the Same movie/concert and noticed he was doing it on a odd looking bass with a big body(was a drummer at the time and did'nt care too much about basses period).
So when I wanted to up-grade my Ibanez GSR200 bass pack for a "Real" bass I saw a catalog with the "same odd looking" bass that Jonesy played on Whole Lotta Love and the next week I recieved my first Fender jazzbass that I bought on e-bay,it was a hog that needed a trus adjustment every 2 weeks but I loved it,it was the same kinda(almost)bass my buddy Jonesy had,it was all downhill from there.

It is an industry standard for a reason, the tone and history speaks for itself.

I first wanted a black Pbass with a rosewood neck because I saw this really cool picture of the Thin Lizzy bass player in a pose with his Pbass and I said that was the bass for me. When I finally got the money together I went to my local music store and tried out every black Pbass in the store and felt dissapointed in the feel and sound I was getting. I picked up a jazz bass and instantly fell in love with it right then. It was a natural finish with a rosewood neck, I was in heaven. Unfortunatly it was stolen and it was replaced with an ash bodied Jbass with a maple neck and it's even better. 35 years later it's still my first choice of all my basses.

my 2 basses as a teen were a Ric and a P.... took years (ok, decades) off from playing and when i came back my first purchases again were a Ric and a Fender P... then one day in a local music store i saw a Geddy Lee Jazz hanging there and loved the look of it (slender neck, block inlays, etc) ... i bought it figuring, what the heck... if i dont like playing it i can always sell it.... i loved it... i fell in love with the slim neck within about 15 minutes of play and after spending a day or two jumping from pup to pup testing out different tones it became my go-to bass for gigs....it's got the Funk for some Aretha or James Brown-ish stuff and the fat, round tone for some old blues stuff (and everything in between)

it has a slimmer neck than my Ric (i have smaller hands) and a bit fatter low end...

after buying the J... i sold the P....

bottom line.... it's all about playability and tone.....

My very first Fender was a brand new 1968 Jazz, at the time I didn't like the neck because it was so thin. I went with a Precision shortly after and have used them as my #1. Not too long ago I put SPB-3's in my FSR Precision, while they are awesome pickups, to me they don't have the Fender sound. The ones I took out were terrible. It still plays great and the sound is so powerful.

I walked into a small music store just because, and there was a used MIM Jazz hanging on the wall. It came home with me, after a few mods, covers and thumb rest (tugbar), it's my #1. Between the thump and the growl, it just has "that" sound.

I better get all of my 'stats' out front so you know where I'm coming from and why the Jazz Bass is my bass. I'm in my late 50's and have played for 45+ years. My first bass was a Stewart (??). As a high school graduation present, by dad gave me a '64 Jazz Bass (I graduated in '71). I played that for 20 years, in and out of different bands, had other makers basses, but always came back to the Jazz Bass. The neck! The range of tone! I'll stick with the passive bass, while I've played active basses. The craftsmanship on the '64 made the sound something you have to feel as well as to hear. As I said earlier, I've tried probably 10 other makers of basses from different time periods, but for me, the Jazz Bass is always my 'go-to' bass.

Everything you said. I've got a couple years on you, my love affair with Fender guitars and basses goes back to the beginning. Am I a Fender snob? Yeah I am. Maybe there are other basses that do it for other people but Fender is my choice.

Exactly! Fender snob? Yeah, and proud of it! I bought a 'computer made' brand (in CA) and after playing it for 1/2 hour, it had nothing to give me. As one friend of mine said, it was "soul-less." Mathematically correct, intonation was precise, but it had no soul! It was like a hunk of ice. I sold it asap (learned an expensive lesson) and I'm a die hard Fender guy.
