Hi there,

A few years ago, I bought a used Fender Jazz Bass which has the serial number E3293. It says "Made in Japan" on the headstock beside the serial number.

I had been thinking about selling it but wanted to put a manufactured date on the ad, but on all the forums I can't see anywhere that dates instruments with E and then 4 digits.

Now I am wondering if I have bought a fake...can anybody advise me?

Thanks a lot...here's hoping.

You are correct that it does not fit the format for a Fender MIJ bass shipped to North America. Fender sometimes uses different serial formats for different distribution channels so it may or may not be genuine. You would have to have it examined by someone who knows how to authenticate it.

There is a gent on the forum named Lawsuitbass that specializes in Japanese Fenders. It would probably be a good idea to post lots of photos of the bass from all angles and then he'll come along and have a look. Genuine Japanese E3's are fairly desirable.
