I recently played a beat up 1997 Fender Jazz bass and it soundeday better than my 2006 MIA Fender Jazz with S-1 Switching. My jazz sounds"weak" in comparison to the robust sound of the 97 version. The 97 was so full sounding, in your face clean & clear with way more output. Each sound was so even accross all strings. Pickup height of both basses looked the same as was everything else .. cables, amp, etc. With the S-1 Switch not engaged my bass sounds like a cheap bass ... What are your thoughts?

Did you play it thru your own gear or different gear?

Are you sure all your connections are secure and properly grounded ? I have a 2006 Fender 50th anniversary jazzbass with the S-1 switch, the only possible variable is the pick-ups which in my bass are the 62 re-issue custom shop ones that came stock on my bass.
I cant believe the difference the S-1 switch makes on my bass, when off the bass sounds like a vintage JazzBass but when activated the bass sounds like I turned on a active pre-amp but without the active tone sound, the tone remains like a vintage jazz but now only LOUDER and clearer, any jazzbass I buy will be fitted with one.
Some basses dont respond well with the S-1 switch,my p-bass sounds empty with it but if I roll off the tone the bass get LOUDER,odd indeed but at least investigate the connections and electronics it may be something wrong within the pickups themselves.
goodluck
