I'm considering buying what is supposedly a 1985 or '86 MIJ Fender fretless Jazz. I say supposedly because both the body and peghead have been painted over in matte black rattle can paint, and I'm somewhat suspicious of the board style. The serial is on the neck plate and is the Cxxxxxx format.

The "fret" board is maple, and has black block markers a la Geddy Lee basses, but the frets are painted on. All this seems to be stock, or at least under the original finish. I've never seen a fretless neck like this, never seen a fretless maple board with lines at all. Fender told me it could be a '75 RI, but it has a 4-bolt neck plate and does not have a bullet truss adjuster. The tuners seem correct and seem to be the old style. EDIT: the trussrod adjust is on the heel.

The purchase price is only $80, but I'd be buying it as a restoration project to sell, so I'd rather not find out it's a no-name bass after I strip it. Can anyone here tell me if they've ever seen this sort of fretboard on a Fender? Any other identifying characteristics I can look for? I'd call Fender again, but they're closed for the weekend and the seller wants an answer by tomorrow AM! No camera with me so no pics.

Thanks in advance.

WOW, Thats a whole list of reasons to not buy it,why would you even consider buying it after all the red-flaggs  ? There were no Fretless Maple necks w/black blocks offered from Japan in the 80's and I dont think they EVER offered them either(if so it was an obscure model not ment for export made in their custom shop)seems like your waiting for someone to tell you what you want to hear, you already know what to do,RUN!!
There are tons of sites on the net that can assist you in indentifying most of the Japanese made Fenders, just google those words and there's more than you could read up on in a years time, there's alot of bogus stuff being sold on the net, there's Fenders labled as vintage which are made up of REAL Fender stuff mixed with GOOD knock-off stuff and/or licensed by Fender stuff too, they are assembled by a decent tech/luthier ETC...and hard to tell over a computer.
Save up and get what you really NEED,not something you WANT now thats available cheaper,go to a reputable seller not some Bozo looking to burn you by "not knowing" what he is selling or whatever the excuse is,STAY AWAY and dont get burned, you already know what to do.
I'm only trying to make you see whats going on with fake or bogus stuff, dont think I'm being nasty,I'm only trying to keep your money out of a scumbags pocket(if thats the case. PICS ALWAYS HELP,WE CAN DO MORE WITH EM,NO PICS=NO BUY

Thanks Lawsuitbass. Believe me, I looked at a lot of pages and images before I posted here. It's tough to find definitive info on MIJ stuff.
