I'm expecting a new Aerodyne in the mail. (I am new to this site: thanks for your help in advance.)

I printed out Fender's Bass Guitar Setup Guide. In it it states two possible ways of new string set up based on the tuning keys. A certain way if you have "vintage" tuning keys, but another way if you have "standard" tuning keys.

Have you any idea what the heck they are talking about?

It may be as to the size of the barrel-- vintage barrels are bigger around than standard barrels-- is what I think they mean. The strings need to be cut at certain lengths in order for them to wrap around the barrel and not overlap or be too short. The standard wraps is 3. I tend to make them fit the barrels even using more wraps per smaller stings. The E string tends to wrap up all the way to the fat part of the string and makes it tricky to get it just right.

prepare for the bigger more detailed dictionary posts-- I may be off.

I'm not into typing a lot of words so I just leave it for people in the know who are good at typing. I sit here and have to pluck out one letter with one finger. You know?

Part of the setup difference may have to do with the direction in which you must turn the tuners to tighten or loosen a string. Vintage tuners and standard tuners are geared oppositely, meaning they work backwards from one another.
