Hello,

I have bumped in on Jazz Bass '78. I am curious how could i confirm that it's not fake and at what i should take a look when i test it. Here are some pictures of it, i hope they would help you to see what kind of Jazz Bass this is.

The serial is off a 78 Fender bass, but its the necks age NOT THE BODY,the serial is on the headstock correct ? its not on the body is it?
You can be sure and take the whole bass apart and theres somethings to look at the authenticate the bass 100%,remove neck take pics of fat end of neck(butt)take pics of where the neck was sitting in(the neck pocket)theres info there that can tell us something, but theres also NO holes for a pickgaurd is there?and no Fender from that year came without a pickgaurd, people took them off but theres still holes to see in the pattern of the pickgaurd.
I believe you have a well worn 78 jazzbass 3 bolt neck(real Fender)the electronics may be real but need to see all apart, the body is some newer model jazzbass design,I dont believe made by Fender but by a company legally allowed to make them for sale(licensed by Fender is the wording)so unless you take EVERYTHING apart or bring it to a music store where they sell used basses and have them look at it(they may not want to waste their time with it,so tell them you want to sell it and they will do the checking no problem for you  )not honest but....
It may be a great bass, but unless your a decent bassist its hard to acess the bass for the sum of all its parts,it could be kick-ass or a complete crapper.

The paint job on the headstock has blotches that are under the decal.... That seems odd to me, but if Memphis (lawsuitbass) didn't mention it, maybe he knows something I don't. :?

I see the decal has some black marker fill-ins,the neck overall LOOKS genuine with the wear and finish crazing/checking etc....the wearing looks legit on the neck BUT its far from a close-up pic and hard to stamp it real.
I mentioned to remove the neck and that would reveal more, the body is def not correctas I can see from the pics, but its my opinion and not fact.
Thanks for the vote of confidence Stroker,if you know something dont worry bout stepping on my toes,It will only better my knowledge.
They are sure doing a number on the vintage market with all the fakes out there, before it was hard to pull it off doing it at a actual music store but the net allows for photo chopping, and with shading and mismatched stuff all pieced together,it's also allowing all kinds of bogus guitars to flood the market.
I see so many basses being called "vintage" that are nothing more than a collection of true Fender and fake parts thrown together pretty well enuff to fool the net buyers, they are really doing a decent job patching the stuff together good-enuff to fool all but only the more knowledgable players/collectors/luthiers ETC...Apawn shop in town who calls me for answers every now and then whos also a decent guitarist ended up buying 3 basses "for a great price" he said and each of them were a mix of older Japanese stuff and "reliced" newer stuff, and he's pretty crafty a buyer so that tells me they are getting better,so PLEASE everyone ask BEFORE you buy,not AFTER.

Obviously a parts bass. The neck is the most valuable part here.

Did Fender offer a Jazz in '78 that didn't have a pickguard on it? In the first photo, I don't see any holes in the body to facilitate mounting a pickguard with, and I just don't recall a model like that from that era, particularly in the Sunburst finish....there wasn't nearly the variety that's available now.

+1

I had the same thought, Bob. AFAIK, FMIC didn't start making Jazz Basses like that until some years later.

No, not on a vintage body as the instrument featured for sale in this Ebay auction demonstrates......

http://www.ebay.com/itm/FENDER-JAZZ-BAS ... 2a0f3b5c38

But the holes for the removed pickguard, pickup cover, and tug bar are still plainly visible.

TAKE NECK OFF,TAKE PICS,POST THEM. and only then can we see enuff to make ANOTHER deduction or the answer to your question, but I stand behind the "aftermarket" body fitted with an original late 70's Fender neck, all the other pieces of the bass seem original but its irrelvant if its a replacement or after-market or decent copy of...ETC.
Whats the price ? I would pay no more than 500.00$ for it and thats if I can see it in person, over a computer NO DEAL for me.
This is my opinion and am in no way advising you too or not too pay a given amt,or am I telling you too,or not too buy it thats for you too decide(I think)
GOODLUCK
PS:post pics,it will help GREATLY!
