I saw an ebay listing for a MIJ '72 reissue Jazz and thought something was wrong. The first red flag was the headstock logo which looks just like the '75 reissue. The other strange thing was that the headstock says "Made in Japan" but the back of the neck at the heel says "Crafted in Japan". There is also a stamp in the neck pocket that says 72R/EX. It has a Badass bridge and Varitone electronics which I assume were added afterward.

Anyone ever see anything like this???

First off the eBay ad is not correct. That is a '75 reissue, not a '72. You can first tell by the logo on the headstock. Also '72 jazz basses were 4-bolt necks, not 3-bolt. AND the inlays should be black if that were a '72 reissue. And, the '72 jazz basses did not have the bullet truss rod. I wrote the eBay seller that he had the wrong description.

But that looks like a typical Japanese Fender '75 reissue except for the added electronics and bridge. The one thing I do not like about the Japanese '75 reissue is, the bridge pickup is in the wrong position. It should be closer to the bridge. So it is not a true reissue like the American made '75 reissue.

Not sure why they do that because the Marcus Miller bass which based off of a '75 jazz has the pickup in the correct position and is made in Japan. One of those things I guess!

Here is what a real '72 looks like (note the logo), these are my two!

Also as far as I know Fender Japan (or US) never made a '72 reissue. The closest would be the Geddy Lee Jazz which is based off of Geddy's 1972 Jazz....and made in Japan.

FYI, I emailed the seller a few times about this date thing. Ends up he is a real moron. Will not except the fact that it is not a 72 reissue. I even quoted stuff from THE FENDER BASS book. Would not buy a guitar pick from this guy. Plus it is so over priced anyway!

Not to dig up an old thread but for what it's worth, My 1997 MIJ '75 Reissue Jazz Bass is stamped JB75 on the neck and JB72 R/I in the pocket. If the 72RI never existed, how can this be?

I think this was the last time I posted any pics. I long for those good old days.

Production of the Geddy Lee Jazz Bass moved to Mexico as of 2011.

The limited edition Geddy Lee signature model is MIA.
