My first Jazz Bass, a 1983 American model, had the three bolt arrangement. It was called micro-adjust neck attachment or something. Personally, I think more bolts would be better. I prefer 5 like my Lakland.

The 3-bolt neck attachment was used on the Jazz bass starting in 1975 until 1982. I say that because my 1983 Jazz has a 4 bolt neck.
The Stratocaster and Telecaster Deluxe and Telecaster bass became 3 bolters in 1972. The bullet truss rod was a part of the three-bolt neck design.

These basses were frowned upon when introcduced but they are actually very nice because they include a neck-tilt feature which is quite handy when adjusted by someone who knows what they are doing.

Maybe mine was a mid transition model. The neck was stamped with a 1983 at the bass. The idea of the tilt is a good one; better than a match book cover shim anyway. I still like the idea of more screws, just imho.
