That high end figure sounds about right since it does not come with the original case. If you had the original case it would be worth another $400 to 500 easy. These typically sell in the range quoted but this one appears original except for the case. Many have been modified. I would not consider less than 2900 for it. That is still under retail for one in that condition too. It would probably appraise much higher.

Thanks for the answers! And I thought that the maximum price would be about 1500...

Do you know anything about ELK amplifiers. I know it's a bit offtopic but i couldn't find any price info for my old Bass Amp FSB-45.

The earlier ELK all tube amps turned out by Miyuki Industrial Company of Japan were actually pretty decent amps of the day. They started out branded as ECHO AMPS in 1953, but then Miyuki started making pro quality guitars so they changed the amp brand to ELK for the amps too. For about a year the ELK logo had a smaller ECHO beneath it. Miyuki exported the same exact amps to Europe badged as LUXOR and ROYAL amps but they were exactly the same otherwise. They made some real powerful amps up to 100 watts as I recall which was a lot for a pre-70 combo or even a piggy-back.

In 1969 the Miyuki guitar/amp part of the complex burned down with hundreds of guitars, maybe up to 300 finished ones and hundreds of amps totally destroyed. Production briefly resumed in another part of the Miyuki complex. Quality was not the same though so Miyuki was looking for a buyer for the brand.

Hoshino Gakki bought the ELK brand name in the early 70's and by 1974 you could buy the same amp branded IBANEZ or ELK! Same amp, different badge.

Hoshino Gakki phased out the ELK brand starting in 1980 or 81. ELK amps featured Fender-like cosmetics, but the circuits were very different from Fender amps and the amps were usually lighter than a comparable Fender.

The best market for ELK amps, especially bass amps, will be ELK collectors. It is rare to ever see one come up for sale and yours looks to be in amazing shape. The one I'm seeing looks like the late 70's. I would not even begin to guess the value. To an Elk collector it might be worth a lot, but to everyone else it is pretty much an odd off-brand amp.

Those numbers seem too high in my opinion. I would say more around 1800 to 2000. Those basses are not as desirable as early '70s basses since they generally are heavy and three bolt.

I bought around three months ago a 1972 jazz, in the original case with the original owners manual. A 4-bolt neck and 8.9 lbs, only paid 2600 and change. The first 1972 jazz I picked up earlier in the year only ran me 2100.

You have a real nice bass there, but I don't think you'll get the numbers the previous posters mentioned. But keep an eye on classifies and eBay. That will give an idea of what they selling for.

Yeah OK and next caller and you are..? Always right..,well nice to meet'cha call back when you cant talk so long.. :D
Just because YOU paid whatever does'nt mean that someone will not pay more, the market fluctuates and basses and their desierability changes time to time, that bass was dead balls mint and the number of basses like this are harder to find and sinking,I would NOT pay the estimation but someone who may want a mint bass to relic themselves or to collect may pay more,So your purchase is'nt the price curve to judge every similar bass by.
I bought a 98% mint US standard p-bass NEVER used sticker on the pickgaurd whole 9 yards 450.00$ sunburst r/wood etc..best p-bass I ever owned and thats over 20 on the low end plus the 9 yrs of repairing them, does that bass act as the gauge to every single used p-basses price ? NO never happen, thats an example of when I bought it,the market price and availability there are so many variables to go by that a pinpoint price on a guitar is in-probable unless your the seller or the buyer, then you can slam the hammer down on its value...And Next caller.....Please hold...
Now you have a good'un!

I have to laugh about your post, do actually know anything about the vintage market?

First I never said my purchases is the pricing curve. They are for reference. But if I picked up two (not one, two) 1972 Jazz basses within the past 8 months or so for no higher then $2600. I think that gives you a good idea of the pricing from legitimate sellers in the vintage market. No, I did not buy my basses from eBay. Some times you can find some good deals, but most times prices on eBay are sku'd out of whack too high.

I hope the OP gets a good price for his bass but I do not see it fetching 2500-3000. At the highest around the $2K mark, which would be great for that bass.

His best bet is to try to sell it on Talkbass.com. That is where I got my two '72s from.

Also according to the 2011 Official Vintage Guitar Magazine Price Guide (which you can get on Amazon) a '78 Fender Jazz - $1500-$1800

Do you have any evidence that the Jazz is a '79, other than the serial number? I have seen them with serial S86.... and neck date from '83.

Tom, you possibly were looking at a neck swap. However, there were not supposedly any 3 bolt necks after 1980. So that aberration can be explained but without physically examining it can't say other than it probably was not 100% original.

Sounds like every S7/S8 serial is suspect to you.

So far as the value is concerned for this instrument the figure I agreed with would be full collector retail. Usually sale prices are negotiated downward from retail asking prices.

They are not "suspect" - they are what they are - great basses. I own a Jazz bass with an S86 serial number. I bought it new around that time. The neck date is 1983 and it is 3 bolt. It is 100% orginal and the neck was definitely not swapped.

The only "problem" is you can't rely on the serial number alone.
