I'm sure this has been done 1,000,000 times but I'm new to the forum.

So, what kind of strings do you use on your jazz bass and, for the most part, what kind of music do you play?

I like them too, but I don't like the chipping. I use DR Hi Beams. Heavy Metal/NYHC is what I play, so stainless steel strings do it for me. Solo I do funk and some jazz, the strings do those too :)

For rounds I only use one string. Thomastik-Infeld PowerBass EB344's.
For flats I use three different sets. Two GHS Precision Flatwound sets, just pick the gauge you want and the Medium 3050 set does hit a happy medium between the three sets. The light set 3025 is better for fusion or funk. The Regular set is better for old school Motown/Stax stuff as they are close in sound to the Labella 760M in sound with lower tension. The Medium set is good if you only have one instrument setup with flats. The other flat set I use is the Thomastik-Infeld JazzFlats JF344 set. It sounds unlike other flats with a unique voice. It also has the lowest tension of any string I use so it takes some getting used to or you can overplay them easily. But once you get used to them, they are golden and they sound good finger style or with a pick.

You can ask 100 different players about strings and get 100 different answers. No one string is right for every instrument or every player.

Even when you find a bunch that like a certain brand, you'll get different answers on why they like said strings.

That also is true. Some people like a certain set for no other reason than because of silk color!

I haven't played much bass in the last 20 years so haven't followed string pricing. It seems to me that bass strings are cheaper now than they were 30-35 years ago.

True. That's because we used to buy them at the local shop and we were paying full retail. I was paying like $20 in 1969 for the same string set that today is still about $20. Meanwhile the dollar is worth like ten per cent of what it was back then! (McDonald's Cheeseburger was about 15 cents then and coke was a dime.)

Now with all the online competition and cut-rate pricing going on at the major online retailers the local shops that want to stay in business have to match or at least come close to matching the cut-rate pricing of the online sites, so that is why I think prices really haven't gone up. One local shop MATCHES online prices, but they don't carry the strings I like so I have to order online. One exception seems to be Thomastik-Infeld strings produced in Austria which for some reason cost an arm and a leg and seem to go up almost weekly.

Makes sense. Online competition, and it seems like more brands available, have kept a lid on price.
