Well, i have a MIM fsr jazz. the quality on it is great. It has a nice tone and great neck. The thing is with most MIMs, the value doesn't go up over time like the Americans do. but they're still great none the less. u should love yours as I do mine :-)

There's no "deal."

They're fine guitars for the money... not exceptional (you hear that from people who feel some kind of need to over-justiy their purchase), not junk (you hear that from ignorant jerks who think The more You Pay, The More It's Worth).

Step one toward finding musical bliss: stop listening to what "a lot of people" are saying about anything.

Do you like your 1998 MIM Jazz? Does it play well and sound good? Does it bring you joy? Are you learning to be a better musician by playing it?

Then it's great, and "a lot of people" don't know what they're talking about.

+10000!

Most of the time the people who are quick to bash Fenders are.....well idiots!

I've owned a number of MIM basses including the Active Deluxe Jazz I have now. And they are great instruments. And the Classic series! Try to find something that good with a great vintage vibe at that price level!

I just got mine and I don't think I would pay any extra for a USA model. I think the MIM's are easily as good as the Americans used to be. I love mine. If I got a deal on a good used USA, I'd still jump on it. I'm in Canada so they are both imports to me.

I have a MIM Jazz and a Geddy. I'd would just as soon have these than pay the extra for a MIA sticker on them. When I got the Geddy, I went in to buy a MIA but I opted the GL over the MIA. Not because of price...it sounded better and felt better. Now this was before the '08s came out. I haven't tried one of the new ones. Anyway, if you like your MIM, you're not alone. There are a lot of MIM owners out here that play them and really like them.
Note: the Geddy isn't MIM.

They are fine basses for the money. If you are a beginning to intermediate player who is on a budget, MIM is the way to go. However, if I were you, I would save up for an American made bass and trade up when you can.

Having played an MIM, Highway 1 and Am Standard Jazz recently, I can say that the MIM is a very nice bass, and quite good value. I think that Highway 1 has a deeper, 'warmer' tone, but is not head and shoulders above at all.

The Standard is head and shouldes above both though, IMO. But here in Australia, the MIM goes for about $1000, H1 $1400 and the Standard for around (more likely way over) two grand, so for the money, MIM's really are a good bass.

I think a lot of people just seem to discount them because they are what they are, a cheaper, non-USA made bass. But they most likely have never played one in their life - probably for the same reasons they speak badly of them!

I checked out different Jazz's before going for MIM, because I found the differences too small to justify any upcharges for a MIA or a HWY1.

I've got the impression anyway, that many dudes out there rather invest into their gear than into their practice.
So don't listen to all those cool equipment-freaks, but enjoy your high-qual-bass that surely gives a lot of bass players a hard time to match the quality of their playing with the quality of a MIM.

Guido from Gernany

P.S.
In the and it's a matter of style anyway. I love the classic FENDER logo on my headstock an d wouldn't want to trade for any the new one on which high quality bass ever.

I am trading in my MIM deluxe active jazz for the new AS J. The difference with all of the new features is very noticeable. The bass is a lot lighter and tighter. I prefer the AS to my MIM DAJ, but the MIM DAJ was a very nice bass for the money. If you are looking for a great bass for an inexpensive price, the MIMs can be the way to go. Just make sure that you play plenty of basses before you make a choice. Happy Hunting

I just got rid of a PRS bass to buy a jazz and out of curiosity picked up a MIM after playing two USA jazz basses and was blown away. It played better than both and was half the price. After spending 13 years in Fender denial it's good to be home.

P.S.the store where I bought it from has a pair of 'old stock' dimarzio J's at an 'old' price. Any experience/advice concerning them?

I have played many mim fenders in my day, adn they are glorious instruments. Fo the people who say the onlyt difference is "Made In USA" printed on the neck, this is untrue. THe american standards are made of solid alder where as most of the mexican stanards are made of an alder/basswood mix. This doesnt affect the tone greatly but it does slightly. Also the pickups on the American stanard are pretty much noiseless, and the pickups on the mexicans can get some buzz, but that is an easy fix, just sheild the control cavity. And you do have to pay attention to where it is made, i dont want to buy a bass and in turn be supporting child labor. Being from michigan i am really begining to feel the affects of imports on our economy. Thats why i vow to always buy american from now on. I mean its not like im going to buy 5 bass at $1000 each, just one. BUt eh MIM is still a quality instrument.

What makes an instrument good is very subjective.Trust your own taste and preference, that's my advice.
