Ok, so I've decided that I don't need any new guitars because I can get most of the sounds I want out of the two I have. I would however like to start slapping de bass. I would like to get something quality and personal from the get-go, so I'd want to build/assemble exactly what I think I want, which would be:
-30 inch scale (i gots small hands.... I know like everyone and their uncle says that :S )
-rosewood veneer board or ebony slab
-aerodyne-like (bound body, j and p pickups, awesome looks, matching headstock)
-maybe block inlays
-white finish

Any tips on how to achieve this/get started? All help is appreciated :)

edit: forgot to mention I'm a lefty. That really helps things ;)

That's very ambitious for a first project bass.

Most Fender's are going to have a 34 inch neck. You might could use a Mustang Bass neck.

I don't know what your luthier skill level might be but body binding is almost always problematic. Even Fender had trouble with it on the Coronado series which is precisely what led to the introduction of the Antiqua finish as it hid the flaws.

I could do a JazzStang or a P-Stang setup pretty easily, but can't help you with the binding. I'd suggest a P/J pickup set.

I was thinking of just trying to find an aerodyne body and working from there... I'm not experienced in the actual "making" of parts (shaping bodies, finishing etc) but I have done wiring and putting together the "parts" of guitars.

Thanks!

Other than the bound and block in lays, it sounds like a short scale Ibanez Soundgear w/pj pups :P

All kidding aside, Bronco and Mustangs are short scale, you can buy those. But if you're goal is to build your own, good luck to you. Show us the bass when you're done putting it together.

I think the aerodynes are made of Junkwood-- you might want a nice body with good wood-- of course I come from the "sound and not looks" county.

+1

Serious tone demands serious lumber. Ash, alder, or mahogany will all get you a ticket on that bus.
