I don't know what Fender's idea was, but I've seen at least one guy who not only had the standard strap arrangement (top horn and behind the bridge), but had an additional strap coming from the top of the strap where it lay across the shoulder and attached to the button on the back of the headstock. Perhaps to eliminate neck-dive?


From the articles that Bass Player Magazine has written over the years about the history of Fender and the anniversaries of the P-Bass and J-Bass the extra strap button was because most acoustic guitarists at the time hooked their guitar strap to their headstock. Since the electric bass was a Brand New instrument they thought they were being innovative and put a strap button on the back of the headstock so that bass players could more easily have that option too.
