Hello,

I didn't forget you guys! But i'm making no progress at the moment, so I don't have anything to post. . My guitar builder is currently very busy with his studies (master in engineering). He is working on the templates when he has time, but the cut out of the body is something for after his (and mine) exams. We glued the end grain of the maple and the alder, so the moist left in the wood can leave it equally and not only through the end grain (to avoid cracks).

Greetings!

I used preeb’s thread as a guide. The pictures and information were really helpful.

Specs:
Body: American Red Alder

Neck: Michigan Maple

Fingerboard: Michigan Maple
Fingerboard inlays: MOP Blocks

Pickup routes: ‘double fit’ Jazz Neck + P-bass at the neck position, Jazz Bass bridge pu at the bridge position
->The pickguard will be slightly adjusted to cover the P-Bass pu cavity.

Hardware: Leo Quan BadassIII bridge, Hipshot tuners, bone nut.

Finish: Body: Olympic White, nitrocellulose lacquer. Neck: clear nitrocellulose lacquer.

I bought the Jazz Bass plans drawn by Jason Lollar at the MIMF (it seems that these aren’t offered any longer).

Image
Copied the body part and glued it on a piece of MDF

Image
Cut the template using the bandsaw, it was quite cold back in February!(that’s ice on the window)

Image
Template all finished.

Image
Body wood

Image
Body wood rough cut.

Image
Routed. I then rounded the edges using a 1/2” roundover bit.

Image
Back

Image
I connected the roundovers at the neckpocket sides and the rest of the edges by hand

Image
The belly carve: it was almost finished in this pic.

Image
Neck pocket routed.

Image
I then made the neck-template and made sure it fitted.

Image

Image
The neck blank. It originally was very roughly milled, bowed, twisted etc. This is after planing it using my jointer/planer and finishing by hand using StewMac’s fret level beam with some 60grit sandpaper (finished with 100grit).

Image
Attaching the trussrod-channel template. I’m using StewMac’s HotRod (24”)

Image
After routing the trussrod-channel, I drilled the hole to adjust the trussrod.

Image
I made sure the hole had enough margin, since the allen nut was welded on crooked.

Image
I then routed out the neck. Here you can see how crooked the nut was welded on. No problem though, everything works fine.

Image
The headstock. I used a PDF I found at TDPRI that contains several J- and P-bass headstocks.

In the bridge position I'm going to put a DiMarzio DP 123 Jazz pickup. Is it ok to take a set of two DP123's and put one in bridge position?

About the P pickup... should I take the same position as the P pickups on a Precision bass (= make a custom wider pickguard), or just move the P pickup a little to neck position, so i can make a double fit for a J & P pickup (if I want a full Jazz bass later), and just need to change pickguard to cover the holes?

Have a look at this or this, from another builder.

Greetings

And this is where I’m currently at:

Next thing on the list is planing + thicknessing the fretboard, and sawing the fretslots. The inlays still have to arrive, but as soon as they do I’ll rout + chisel the cavities.

This J-bass will have the J-bass set up and the P-J combo set up.. I will route for a J-bass pickup and P-bass pickup at the neck position. Will require a slight adjustment of the pickguard to cover up the P-bass route.

I have thicknessed the fretboard and I have also cut the slots:

Image

I used StewMacs fret slotting jig + the Japanese saw. Took like ten minutes, works like a charm!

As soon as the inlays arrive, I'll inlay them. My friend bought them at Andy Depaule, per recommendation (because of all the good stuff I read here actually). They left about a week ago in Vietnam, should arrive in approx. 1,5 weeks.

To line up the fretboard during glue up, I'm gonna use a tenon-mortise type of thing to fixate the fretboard. That's why I left the nut end of the blank quite long.

Inlays arrived earlier than expected

Image

Now it's time to inlay them.

Blocks are 'easy' to inlay when using chisels.. Or that's what they say.

Alright, inlays are in!

Image
I first routed out the cavities, staying away from the outline. I scored the outline using a Stanley razor blade. I used StewMacs mini routerbase + one of their downcut spiral bits. Worked really well.

Image
I used chisels to get right to the line.

The result

I then inlaid the inlays. After this I radiused the board and I recut the fretslots using a depth stop.

I really like the fact that you are using the 123 pickups-- too bad you can't find any from the late seventies. They sounded better than the new ones. That's not to say the new ones blow though. They are still my fave.

This whole thread just amazes me..truly is an art form...I find it annoying just to change strings without drawing blood...I can not wait to see the finished project and I also hope you post an audio clip !
