Hello everyone! First post!

5 december 2012: The bass is finished. Big thanks to my friend and builder Daniel of ADG Guitars for doing this great job!

Work, most of the text and pictures are by my builder.

Sorry for the late updates. I opened up this topic way too early. I bought the wood in august 2011, but the actual build started in march 2012. The builder himself, a good friend, has a more detailed topic with progress comments and pics on some forums. I copied his topic code and inserted it in here.

I'm going to build a 4 string Fender Jazz Bass to play some Kyuss and other stonerrock tunes. The bass will be tuned in C (C-F-A♯-D♯).
A good reference for the sound (and maybe wood, pickups, hardware,...) I want, is Nick Oliveri, bass player in Kyuss (Lives!) and QOTSA.
First things first: what kind of wood? I was thinking about an alder body with maple neck and fretboard. Finish will be Olympic white, so grain in the wood is not a thing to keep in mind.

If anyone has ideas, hints,... you're welcome!

Greetings! :D

If you're going down to C, you might want to reconsider the scale...our Fender 34" scale is not the best tuned below D - That's where I left mine at...Any lower usually the Ibanez basses suits the lower tuning better. I'm into NYHC and Thrash. That's just my experience tho. Good luck with your project...when you're done, consider posting the pix...or you know:

NO PIC NO BASS

All the Ibanez basses that I had also were 34" scale. I put thicker strings on my bass to compensate the tension on the neck. And I think Mister Oliveri is playing that C tuning on Fenders for a very long time (and it sounds awesome!).

Of course, i'll post the progress of this build regularly, with pic's.

My BTB sounded good tuned to C, but the Fenders aren't so great. My old cabs (410XL & 115XL) was able to masked the 'looseness' of the strings. Not sure if my current set up will. If you're able to do it, good for you. I'm happy with my standard D tuning. Can you get sound clips too in C? Good luck man!

So was mine...

Other than the SoundGear series, every Ibanez bass is 35" scale right - Short scale not included ;)

Dude. What's the point. If you are going to tune down that far just buy a 5 string. I've done the transition from 4 to 5 to 6 and it really isn't that big a deal.

You will still have the same range plus a little bit. The technique adjustment is minimal. The landmarks that you are used to will still be there. Just in a slightly different place. Plus you will forgo the refiling of the nut for heavier strings. The adjustments that will be needed to the bridge to compensate. The intonation issues. Adjusting how hard you play because if you play with a "normal" to "heavy" touch it will make what you play be out of tune (something I learned from reading about Anthony Jackson, Sean Yesult, and numerous others talking about severe detuning).

As somebody who has made the transition (I sound like a transexual) the adjustment is fairly minimal. It only took me a couple of weeks to adjust to the slightly wider fret board and realizing that my lowest string was no longer E. Granted at that point I had already been playing about 8 years and I took plenty of time to think about it and consider how I used that low string.

I'm sorry. You must have your reasons but it just doesn't make sense to me. I feel the same way about Baritone Guitars. If you are going to tune down that far buy a 7 string. If you say "Because it looks cool" I may scream.

Stay Brown,
Rev J

Now that is some sound advice.

Exactly my thoughts. Maybe I should stick to my own advice and just buy a piece of alder, before we run out of trees.

Update: Ordered the plans at mimf.com (crappy phone pic)

The Leo Quan Badass III Bass Bridge is on it's way. The wood will arrive in a couple of days. Pickups: The neck pickup will be a double fit, for P's and J's. Planning to get the DiMarzio Model P DP122, and maybe later a pair of Model J's. PJ setup with the possibility of a full Jazz setup. 8)

DITTO! I also love a good build/project myself and am currently working on a P/J Japanese Frankenstein bass(Thats FRONK'enstein kind Sir').
Its a cornaccopia of Japanese made parts(Fender and Lawsuit) mostly from the late 70's and early 80's with a few "newer" things here and there but the important stuff is A.V.(almost vintage)and it should have been long done by now but being un-employed is'nt easy and its hard to justify buying all new electronics for a hob-knob bass when I already have more basses than I really need(SHhhh,It's just a decoy to avoid persecusion)joking aside just some pickups and its done,YES and pics will be posted shortly.
