How about a 5 string bass with a maple frettboard for under 1300.00? I get the feeling fender hates 5 string players or maple, one of the two. For example: Standard jazz, available in many colors with maple OR rosewood. Standard jazz 5 string: 2 colors, only rosewood. I would love a deluxe active 5 if I could get something besides Pau fero. CMON!!!

I'm not whining, just don't want to play anything but Fender Jazz. I can't afford 1799.00 to get a maple fretboard on a 5 string. Even Squire has a 5 string with a maple fretboard. I would love a deluxe active 5 string with maple fb. Would even settle for a standard mexican jazz if I could get maple.

Mexican 5-stringers are available only with a rosewood neck option. If you want a 5-string Jazz Bass with a maple neck, you might consider purchasing an American Standard or an American Deluxe.

The Deluxe Active specs sheet says this model having a 4+1 layout as the Standard. However the pictures show the instrument with the "older" 5-in-line arrangement, which is not the correct specification for a post-2009 Deluxe Active bass.

IMO Fender needs to update the products page in order to display the Deluxe Active Jazz Bass V with the 4+1 tuners.

They are on the Deluxe Jazz page. Click on Models at the top of the page, the you will see the V strings listed at the bottom of the list.

Also, when you go into products, Click on Jazz Basses. Go down the list to and click on American Deluxe(2), Then the entire Am. Dlx. page comes up. it switches to all the basses and guitars in the Am. Dlx. series. The V string basses come around on that also, or you can use the side selector arrows to advance the page to the next guitar or bass.

Right, but I'm talking about the MIM Deluxes, not the US.

What is your beef (besides cost) with Pao Ferro? If bright is what you want (seeing as how you mentioned maple) then you should consider Pao Ferro as well. Some will consider it less bright than maple but more than rosewood (my personal opinion) while for others the difference (on a fretted bass anyway) will be neglible. I have a fretless Pao Ferro and I wouldn't even consider maple or rosewood (unless the rosewood was sealed in polymer and then the rosewood is just wallpaper at that point).

i too agree that hand hates 5 strings, i really want a five string deluxe p special, without forking out £3000 (uk) for a custom shop one.

the lack of five strings made me look at the deluxe jazz bass 5 (above)

whats the main difference between rosewood and maple fretboards? just the looks?

I'm more a P-Bass fan than Jazz Bass but at my local music store there's a 5 string Jazz that's about 4 years old and I think it sounds pretty sweet. It's a MIM and it has the volume, volume, tone set-up (so it's not the fancy EQ stuff) so I guess it's a standard 5 string.
I think the tone gets thickened up by having the strings latched onto such a big neck. So maybe that would be another consideration.
Also, Fender 5 strings have a nice sturdy low B, which makes me Epiphone sound flappy and unfocused by comparison.

:? :?:

It seems you budget does fall between most Fender models with the maple fingerboard. Although higher than your budget, you can get the American Deluxe close to $1600 retail online. Not minimizing $300.00, but you will have the top production model Fender has to offer. It still has only two colors: natural & black. But, it has some really nice additional features

From the Fender website...

"A newly designed preamp circuit delivers exhilarating active and passive tone, and powerful-yet-quiet new N3 noiseless pickups present more clean headroom and EQ range than ever, effortlessly handling the low B string with impeccable tone and seismic power. Other features include a compound radius fretboard and asymmetrical neck profile for fast action and silky-smooth playability all the way up the neck, active/passive switch and passive tone control for even more tonal options, and classic Jazz Bass block fretboard inlays and binding."

If you like these additional options the extra dough will not be in vain.

The conventional wisdom is that maple fretboards/fingerboards are considered to be a bit more snappy sounding with more upper mids than the slightly softer and more mellow sounding rosewood. To a certain extent that is true. But as pointed out earlier in this thread, on a fretted instrument fretboard material makes less of an impact than on a fretless. Also as the rosewood dries out it gets harder so there is even less of difference.

I prefer rosewood on brighter sounding basses like a J-Bass. But it really makes little audible difference. Dark wood fretboards/fingerboards camouflage visible wear and metallic discoloration as you often have to feel the fretboard to find any wear. I think pickup selection makes more of a difference to the tone than board material.

N3 pickups will be replaced by the brand-new Super 55 Split Coils for Jazz Bass in 2012.

These phenomenal sounding pickups feature two separate, linear wound coils that produce absolute hum-free performance while giving more useful output without sacrificing ANY of the coveted Fender single coil pickup tone and feel.

Also featuring symmetrically staggered pole pieces, alnico 5 magnets and 42 gauge Formvar wire. Fender Split Coil, Super 55's give you absolutely everything cool about tone plus a bump in vibe without buzzing out you or your sound man.

Super 55's came with a Quick Connect cable for easy installation without the nightmare of soldering ground wires.
