We live on the other side of the river. It's more rural than Fishkill. My wife and I are both from the Bronx and we'd never go back. We both commute but love it up here. We go to the city for restaurants, museums and then for St. Patty's, Sax, and Rock Center during Christmas and that's about it...

Project update: After 22 years I can finally play Iron Maiden's "Trooper" on a Bass guitar!!!! It's more fun on a Bass than a six string. I'll tell you, the noiseless jazz pups and the steel strings are one hell of a combination! It has that smoothness but still has a bright metal growl, really cool stuff. Its still a little scratchy because the strings are new, but no hum or buzz at all. On the Fender combo amp I'm set at 3/4 bass, 1/2 mid, and 1/4 tone. I've got both vol pots and the tone on full blast and is sounds awesome.

Like I said in an earlier post, the strings still need a little breaking in and I only have time to play 20 min. a night after the kids are down to sleep...so its going to take another week or two. I tightened up the screws on the pups, bringing them down a bit and that help clear up the notes, but I'm considering flatwounds. I know its not very "head banger" of me but 80% of the stuff I'm playing requires a pick...unless I want arthritis. I'm thinking about changin to flats until I put the maple neck on this winter.

Hey you talking about The Trooper and then flats, then you say not "head banger"??? C'mon, the man that wrote The Trooper only plays flats. That's right Arry plays his sig strings - Roto Flats, Steve Harris Sig :D That's headbangin to the hilt brotha!

Thats a very good point, dude... I've percieved flats as a blues/jazz kind of string. But,yes, Harris and other's have used them. Harris is also British so the Rotos make sense 8)

Have you (or anyone else here) ever used the Fender 9050's? So far the jury is still out on the 7350's. I still say the 7250's had a better sound.

Project Update: No word yet from the shop about the Badass III Bridge... :?

Leo Quan BAIII bridges were discontinued over a year ago. Good luck with that. I think you may have meant BAII.

The BAIII would be a waste on that bass unless you drilled holes and installed ferrules for body through stringing. Otherwise, you might as well get the BAII if you just have to have a Leo Quan BA bridge.

I'm no Leo Quan bridge fan myself. They have atrocious customer support for a product that costs such an outrageous amount of money. I have owned the BA bridges and still have one now on one bass, but will never buy another if I can get around it.

I would suggest as an alternative the $45 high mass GOTOH 201 bridge. That is less than half the cost of a BA II. The Gotoh 201 is actually are a very good high mass bridge that is easy to setup and all Fender Japan instruments historically have used GOTOH hardware so you can rely on their quality.

In my experience high mass bridges in general are severely over-hyped as far as contributing to tonal improvements. They can add some sustain, but they do not actually improve tone. Some are more stable than the MIM or Asian Fender stock bridges though. What high mass bridges actually do sound-wise is give you the same tone that lasts slightly longer. Not all musical styles or all players benefit from extended sustain. I even use foam muting sometimes to kill sustain. It is my opinion that a player will always get more tonal improvement bang for their buck from copper shielding, tone capacitor upgrades and even a better instrument cable. Actually a good optical compressor will give you way more sustain than any high mass bridge will.

If you want to know the truth, one of my favorite bridges to this day is the "Original Fender Vintage Bass Bridge" that has been around for over 50 years. That is the one with the screw type threads on the saddles that keeps the strings in place. It often sells for about $35. I've found it to be one of the simplest, easiest to setup and stable bridges Fender ever offered. If it has any weak point it would be that it is slightly less stable than the Schaller made roller type bridges Fender had made especially for use on some high end "Deluxe" and "Elite" instruments in the early 80's and more recently the design was beefed up for the recently discontinued Big Block P-Bass. Those Schaller roller bridges are way better to me than any BA, but that is just my opinion based on my personal likes.

Good luck if you ever need a part from Leo Quan. If my experience is any indication you are not going to get one. They only offer email support. I have emailed them twice over the past 20 months asking to purchase ONE SIMPLE PART. They never answered my email even to say, "no can do."

YES!!!!!! WOW!!!!! And here I am thinking I was nuts or what's wrong with me that I think the Fender vintage bridge is so good. I'll even say things that you won't say== like a Badass II sucks the tone out of a bass alot of the time-- not allways but alot. Anyone can disagree but I've had a whole bunch of them. from Stroker Vance--- ( I too will avoid them in the frucha'. )

Tough to get BA III right now....eBay seems to have them every now and then. I did use 9050s for flats. Not a fan of flats tho, my self. I use DR Hi Beams - ss rounds.

I got the Badass II on back order. My guy says he can have it by late September. Leo Quan is doing some re-tooling and making distribution/supply changes.

DR's...hmmmm. I've been hearing a lot of DR and GHS not only from a couple suggestions here but with some bass player I know. I've always used Dean Markley's on my six strings (electric and acoustic) but I hear the DM Bass strings are not that great so I'm venturing out...that's why I tried Fender's strings. I just wasn't sure which bass strings to use so I went with Fender strings for a Fender, playing it safe. That, and I'm a fan of Frank Bello (from The Bronx and Anthrax is a staple band).

I might try the Harris Rotos when I change the neck. You've really got me thinking about that... But, dude, I had no idea he was using 110's! That's pretty heavy for a new bass player?!

I've been hearing a lot of negative feed back on Erine Balls... They are a big name, never used them, but still interesting to hear negative feedback from such a popular brand. The feed back is coming from guys I know who gig

Any feedback on Dunlops? I've missed a lot the past decade but is seems like they've become the signature "heavy metal string." No? :?:

that's how Arry got his thumping sound, of his fat E string :D You do get used to whatever strings you put on after a few licks tho. So I'd be more worried about enlarging the space for your E string on the nut -which btw I've never had issues with when I did use .110.

Fender strings went down in quality the last 2 yrs. I switched to them in the early part of the decade...then they just got bad. I mean, not just 1 set, but a few sets were like bad from the start. So I went back to DR. I know Fender strings were so cheap and great quality. It's not true anymore. I didn't like the EBalls...just not a good sound - for me. The lasted awhile but I didn't like the sound. I do know Flea uses them and swear by them (paid by them maybe...hahahaha...enderoser)

Not sure with Dunlops, never used them. I know they were on the value side on price. Not saying it's bad. Just no experience with 'em. You seem to like the same music I do. DR for me, the Hi Beams. Roto's are good too, they are also pricey. Stainless seems to be the key for the heavier music. Either way, g'luck man!!

Tell me what you think when you get 'em on your bass. I've done Rotos but not the SH sig. I think you'll like 'em. Flats and all.

SH77 Rotos = Amazing!!!! Thank you for the tip! 8) Trooper, Where Eagles Dare, and Fear of The Dark were echoing... Number of The Beat is going to take some time, and endurance... I played some harder stuff and the strings held up, they play like silk! No finger slide noise and the growls are a real growl not just an annoying crunch. Slayer's "Disciple" sounded great as did Anthrax's "Now It's Dark." It's a better combination with the Noiseless pups. I didn't expect a "heavy string" to play so easily. Bending was fine, sliding was easier...

In the mean time, I've done some shopping and everything is on order!

I changed my mind with Ultra light Hipshot tuners, I went with the Black Lollypops. The Y shape just doesn't go with a fender IMO. And, those are some expensive tuners!!! They almost cost more than what I paid for the bass...

I ordered the MM J bass neck, solid maple, black inlays, a black MM neck plate, black 3 string holder (just to be different), black graphite nut.

Stay tuned for pictures. The only thing that will hold this up is Mr. Quan getting his butt in gear and shipping the BadassII to the shop! The bridge is due in a few weeks so I'm going to hold off and have everything put on at once. I bought another set of SH77's to be put on too!
