I played 6 string for years and played often before I graduated college. My guitar, a Yamaha acoustic that was a birthday present from my wife 14 years ago is the only guitar I had left. I might play it 5 times a year now.

Last month I rescued a Squire Jazz Bass Affinity. The person who owned it played the Bass 4 times before it was forgotten. I bought it for $150.

I played the Bass for 3 weeks, building up my calluses again. I learned a few songs, and built up my hand flexibility too. Then I thought I’d have some fun.

The Squire is in the shop getting hooked up. New Fender 7380M strings (105, steel), N3 Noisless pick ups, new pots, lower stings, neck adjusted, polished and oiled finger board. Can’t wait to get it back!

The body is electric blue with white pick guard, rosewood finger board, chrome tuners and bridge.

This winter I’m changing the neck to a maple finer board, Might Mite neck with black inlays, black tuning keys and machine heads, and a black BadassII bridge. I’m also putting in a black string holder, black strap buttons, and a black pick guard. Going to get a Big Muff this month.

I’m going to make it a project while I start playing again. :D

Would have been cheaper to buy a MIM Standard model or a used US made,as a bass/guitar tech I tell my customers its usually cheaper to be a better model than to buy a entry level and hot-rod it,its a recommendation that I myself did'nt take and ended up spending more than what I needed too.
But some like to build thier own little by little and I can respect that, either way contratulations on you new bass.

Thanks, man! 8)

Yeah, I want it to be a project. I'm going to spend enough in the end to probably buy an American!

But I rescued this Bass from a kid who is a complete doofist and was going to throw it out! So, I'm just having some fun.

I dropped off the black pick gaurd and black strap buttons today. The bass is still being worked on at the shop I'm using. Everything chrome will be black when I'm done.

One thing disappointmented me... I saw the bass today and the pickups are not N3. The pickups just read "Noisless." The owner was not there so I didn't ask the kid at the counter. Any input would be welcomed... I research pickups and from what I read the N3's are the latest and greatest and the SCN's are discontinued. :?:

The Affinity series are sort of the low end of the line. I wouldn't invest too much in it unless you plan to keep it forever as you'll never recoup your investment.

I am more of a wood kinda guy, necks and bodies are more my line of expertise but I do have some knowledge of types of pickups the "Noiseless" pickups are a higher end pickup Fender uses on many of their "Deluxe" models and also a few here and there in an artist model or two, they use ceramic in their design and are claimed to be noiseless even when used solo'd(jazz pickups are hum canceling when used together but if one or the other is turned off they tend to get a little noisy but the "noiseless" are uniqualy quiet most of the time.
I would hold off on all the other mods you mentioned because just the bass and the new pickups and strings you have close to 400.00$ into it,then a new neck, hardware and installation and preperation of the neck is another 400.00$(necks dont come pre-drilled for mounting or with a pre-cut nut)and dont forget the black tuners and and all black bridge(black is like another 50.00$ over chrome)Its gonna get costly.
I bide my time and waited and it payed off,I got a brand-new old stock 2003 American Precision bass for 475.00$,I'm glad I did'nt jump on the first decent p-bass I found which was a 1992 MIM p-bass for 300.00$,I almost could'nt wait to have a bass after being without one for almost a year and my haste almost made me end up with the MIM p-bass for 300.00$ I went after work a week later and there was a U.S. made freshly tagged for sale 2003 American made p-bass(3 tone s/burst,r/wood neck)waiting one week was the difference between a MIM bass and a U.S. made bass, bide your time a good bass will come down the pike

Thanks for the info and the advice guys. Its truly appreciated.

I don't expect to get an investment back on this bass. I know Squire is low end. I'm just having some fun with it.

After I learn how to play bass at the level I can play my six string I will invest in a good bass...probably an American Standard J. But, I've got a couple of years before I do that.

The Squire is a project bass that, yes, in the end nothing will be left of it but the body which is in perfect shape. I'm even getting a black neck plate for it

Got the bass back. The Noiseless Pickups are awesome! They sound better than I expected and are worth every penny!

I'm not that happy with the strings. I put on Fender 7350M's. The E string sounds horrible, too crackley to the point where its drowns out the note. The A is dull. The D and G sound like the NPS strings I just replaced

I'm going to break them in for a few weeks and see what happends. But, so far the 7350's are of to a bad start.

So, there is hope for the 7350M strings...

I tuned them up so tight I thought they were going to snap! I gave them a good pull and kept them tight overnight. The result was pretty good. The cracking of the E string is gone and the other strings sounded better too. I played Walk (Pantera) and Bulls on Parade (Rage Against The Machine) so that too gave the strings a good work out. I had to re-tune when I was finished.

The shop I use said they can get me a BadassIII in black. I hope so because its impossible to find online.

Okay I'll ask-- what was the reason for tuning the strings so tight that you thought they would snap?

A guy I know whose played bass since for years gave me that advice after describing the problem to him. He's been gigging for over 15 years so I figured it would be a good idea to try. His rationale was the 105 steel roundwound strings really need a good stretch because the windings are very tight when the strings are out of the box.

So, I figured two things would happen:

1) It would work.
2) My strings would snap, I'd buy new ones, and put my foot in his a** the next time I saw him!

Seriously, it did produce a good result. Even my wife, who knows nothing about music or instruments, said that it sounded better and didn't sound "stringy" anymore.

Tonight, I feel like Lamb of God maybe some Slayer if I don't get home too late...

Thanks!

All the chrome will soon be gone and all metal parts will be black. I also decided on the Y shape black tuners.

By the holiday season I will call it the "Russ Bad Mo Fo Fender Series!"

I grew up in the Bronx, but now I'm married and live in the woods. I'm about an hour and a half north of the city.

Can't wait to finish this Bass. Thanks!
