I posted this inquiry under Squire earlier because I'm unsure of what I have. Maybe the right person will see this and be able to shed some light on this guitar. I have browsed until my eyes hurt and have not been able to identify a "Fender" bass I recently acquired. It is a typical Jazz bass in appearance. The headstock has the Fender logo and a serial number (S732327) underneath but does not have Jazz Bass or anything else afterward. There are no identifying marks of any kind anywhere else inside or out. The neck is bound and the fretboard was factory stained to appear as ebony etc. The pick up covers have E.P.B. on them. After some re-soldering, new strings and set-up it sounds and plays pretty good. Kind of bright like a vintage Rickenbacker bass. It's obviously an older instrument, but still in fairly decent condition. I'm just fixing it and passing it on to a beginner. Any ideas as to what its origin might be would be appreciated. http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm27 ... G_0980.jpg http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm27 ... Indeed.

The lack of binding going around the heel is not right for a CBS-era Jazz Bass neck. This is the correct configuration......

As well, for a vintage or re-issue late 60's or '70s instrument the fretboard would have the pearloid block position markers.

The headstock decal is enigmatic, not matching any known Jazz Bass that I'm aware of. The string tree is not a Fender part, being both the wrong shape and the wrong finish.

The bridge looks wonky too but I can't precisely put my finger on what the issue is.

Possible Tokai or Ibanez clone......?

Looks to me like a parts bass of some sort with a bad electronics route- and a decal on some other kind of neck- MM or whatever-- Bridge also-- Something is not right about that bass-- EPB pickups--- well those aren't stock. I'm not saying it's junk. How would I know?

Google says there are at least three other guitars claiming to have that serial number.

Thanks everyone. I have bought and sold a lot of guitars, not so many basses. Although this bass looks and plays fairly good, it just didn't look right to me and I couldn't find anything Fender to match. The lack of any internal markings and the stained fretboard made me suspicious from the start. So, it's some kind of knock off that is certainly good enough to learn on. I'll be sure to let the recipient know that it is not a genuine Fender guitar. Thanks again for your expert advice. I'll be back...

It def a knock-off that someone put a Fender style decal on,there are alot of Japanese made copy basses that are high quality, this bass does'nt look to be a Fender but its not a P.O.S. judging by the pics, somewhere on that bass whether under the pickgaurd,in the neck pocket or the butt of the neck will be some type of clue to who made this bass, its just a question of how far will you go to locate it.

After another look it seems to be a late 70's "Lawsuit Bass" there's a couple of brand names who used those types of knobs and large truss-rod access to standout from the masses of "copy basses" being produced at that time,it may be an Aria,Greco and my opinion a R.K.Herby and all of which are decent basses but often varied time to time in Q.C.

I completely disassembled this guitar. There are no stamps, pencil marks or any other type of indications as to what the origin might have been. There are a couple bright spots on the back of the neck where there were stick-ons. One of which might have named the country of origin. No matter, I didn't pay a lot for it and I'm sure my son-in-law will get a lot of enjoyment out of it. One other point of interest, it's 47" inches long. It will not fit in any of the cases I have. Thanks again for the input.

You cant beat that price huh? It looks to be a decent bass that quite possibly may be one that someone assembled from different parts.
I have myself built basses for customers and also myself from misc. parts both used and new and threw on some Hob-Knob Fender decal for posterity sake,it looks to be a nice bass so tell the new owner to give'em hell with it.
goodluck and if you ever locate some info about or find a stamp or serial number feel free to write back. ENJOY
