I've been the owner of a MIM Classic 70's Jazzbass for about a year and I've never been quite happy with it because I feel it's to "generous" in width in the neck. I've played other Jazzbasses and have been very comfortable with their slimmer necks. Since I love J-basses I'm selling the Classic 70's and buying a new one. I've been happy with my American Special P-bass but instead of buying a American Special J-bass I've been very interested in a Geddy Lee Jazz Bass. My question to you is...is the neck on the Geddy Lee Jazzbass slimmer than on the MIM Classic 70's Jazzbass? Fender advertises both basses to have slim necks but I want to hear from people who actually own or have played them if so is the case.

The neck on the Geddy Lee is not a standard size neck, it is modeled from Geddy's actual bass. Geddy had the neck shaved down thinner. In fact thinner then any standard Jazz bass. The width is still the same as a standard jazz. The thickness of the neck is very much like some of the Ibanez basses.

The Geddy Lee neck is a love/hate thing. Some people like them, some do not. I personally did not like it. I found it too thin and made my hand more fatigued by the end of the night. One of the reasons I sold it.

I much prefer the necks on my 1972 Jazz basses which are thicker or my Sadowsky which is in the middle of my '72 basses and a Geddy Lee neck.

If you plan to get one, I would recommend to try to get as much time on one before you buy it to see how you like that thin neck.

I guess Geddy wanted a Fender with a Rick-thin neck....

I thought Rick necks were chunky from what I remember, but a thin width.

The width of the the Geddy Lee neck at the nut and at the 20th fret is the same as any standard jazz bass. It is the thickness (fretboard to back of the neck) that is allot thinner on the GL jazz.

Thanks for your help. I've been comparing the GL Jazz Bass with the American Special and it seems to be the winner. What people seem to complain about on the GL is the tuners feeling cheap but the pickups och bridge are much better than the American Special (who many claims sounds thin). I own a Rickenbacker and love the neck on that one so I think the GL is for me.

Some of the earlier G.Lee models had some trouble with the necks because they were so thin, the neck on Geddy's bass was in fact shaved down but that was after the bass was around for a decades or more which means the neck was cured/dried/settled in ETC...before this was done,so it being shaved thinner was'nt so much an issue.
