i've been thinking about this for a while now.
i already have the fender 24 V jazz bass and a modded mexican jazz, but last november i came out to florida and went to the guitar center in fort myers, the first thing that caught my eye was the geddy lee sig, which i had already been drooling over the past year. i played it and it blew me away.

i'm in a progrock band (ha yeah what a coincidence :P ) and a funk band, and geddy is my main influence.
so is it worth it?

Its well worth, what are you waiting for! I have the geddy bass with the lacquer finish on the back of the neck, its very smooth to play and the sound that comes out of it is so unique. I heard the sanded neck version of the Geddy Jazz Bass isn't so good... :?

ahh yeah i heard that about the sanded neck too, my mentor (teacher) played one and said even though the neck was as thin as anything he struggled to do what he does best on bass...
the good thing is the one i played had the lacquer finish on the neck! and yeah it's soo smooth and so easy to play on too.
i'll be getting it soon hopefully, maybe for my birthday in april but as soon as i do get it i'll be playing it for days !

I have the Geddy and love it. I do need to get someone to set it up right for me though. The action is a little too high.

I just got a Geddy Lee Sig bass in December and haven't picked up anything else since! It's awesome and I agree that the sound is very unique.

I do have a question, though... One of the things that I was most struck by when I first picked it up was the strings (believe it or not). Over the 20+ years that I've been playing, I have a knack for "killing" strings in only a few playings. Probably because my hands sweat a lot. What I loved about the strings that were on the GL Jazz was that they stayed punchy and crisp, even after playing it like crazy. Most notably, the E string had great ring and sustain.

I looked up the specs on the website and it says all Fenders are fitted with 7250s (medium gauge). I went out and bought a set and there's no way they're the same strings! The E string is flat sounding (like a "thud") and has little sustain. One of the things that I noticed immediately was that the 7250s have thread binding at both ends of the strings. The strings that came on the GL Jazz had no binding. When I went to a few stores to check out other GL basses they also had no thread binding.

Do any of you have particular strings you recommend (beside Rotosounds which I've used for a zillion years) to get the punchy, ringy, long sustain that came with the bass originally?

Thanks!

i know what you mean geddyrules the GL is an AMAZING bass which is why i wanna get it lol
oh, about the strings, i tried some ernie ball strings once, they're punchy and have great sustain but those don't come standard on the GL bass and they don't have any binding on the strings either so i reckon thats the closest you'll get
