Thanks for the welcome. I think I need to take this bass in to get set up properly as it is playing pretty low quality at this point.

I had it professionally set up and still the action wasn't good. There are $150 basses with better action. No punch in the pickups either. So I took it back for a refund.

You couldn't get rid of me. Today I tried out a ton of basses at a music store. I bought a new MIM 2009 Standard. Maple fretboard, beautiful action, no dead spots or extra noise anywhere. It was the most value for the dollar I could see, without spending more than I really should.

That was resolved but other issues weren't. The tech noted in his work order that he couldn't lower the high action due to neck buzz between frets 11-24. I didn't like the set up. I had 30 days to return no questions asked. By about day 25 it felt like returning it was my path of least regret. Perhaps I just got the lemon.

On the other hand I'm happy with the standard, so there is no real disappointment with the outcome.

Sorry to hear of your bad experience with the classic 60's jazz bass. I bought a used one last year (mint condition) and I absolutely love it. I traded my old regular MIM J-bass for it. The quality of the classic 60's is a big step above. Which goes to show you that it's not a simple matter of MIM vs MIA. The lower priced MIM instruments have a lot a corners cut, although they are still a very good value. The quality on my classic 60's MIM is as good as anything I've seen.

It's a compromise between looks and playability. Since I don't play over the bridge pickup, I added the big chrome cover over that but did not put one over the forward pickup. That one would've gotten in my way.

I have been a Fender Bass guy since I was 14 and I'm 55 now. I play bass and guitar and without a doubt Fender makes the best basses and I have tried out many other brands but only a Jazz bass can satisfy. People have offered me 25 times what I paid for my 1966 Jazz Bass but will never part with it.

1966 Fender Jazz
1968 Gibson SG
1970 Acoustic 360 Amp
2006 Gibson Custom Shop Les Paul
2006 Taylor 81CE
2007 MIA Stratocaster
2009 MIA Fender Jazz Fretless

If you do not play from the bridge up to the highest notes part of the fretboard even over the frets ( with your right hand) you are missing out on the many sounds that bass has to offer. Why limit yourself to one standard place to mount your hand and never move it? If you put covers all over your bass you might as well put a cover from the 14th fret up to the 20th and beyond. I've had many bass players tell me " well I don't play much passed the 12th or 14th fret". Okay so if you are into that I think it's cool. Goffer it. One thing is that the cover on a P bass bridge is really not in the way-- I'm bassically talking about ye ole Jazz bass. I'm not saying anyone sucks but I think the idea is odd.

i was about to say the same thing... if you never play over the bridge pickup, why did you buy a jazz? why not a P? i always head back to the bridge pup for the funky bite... and i actually float my hand between the 2 pups for a variety of other sounds... it's very rare i adjust tone controls... i use the spacing between and over the pups and articulation to get the sounds i want.... thats the beauty of a J over a P....

I agree. In classic rock for instance, when I play Journey I move my hand back in front of the bridge to get that squwock sound that Valory gets. It's not exact but kind of close. On walking 12 bar stuff I'll go in front of the neck pickup and get a real smooth sound kind of with the side of my finger. I'll tap fast but lightly over the pickup and get another honk sound. It's all good . Yeh- moving the right hand around is where it's at.
