If I remember correctly, Leo Fender came up with the thin neck design Jazz Bass "Deluxe Model" in 1960. He wanted a 'brighter' bass to compete with the Rickenbackers that had been on the market since around 1957 and the Precision Bass wasn't the answer.

If your serial number has no letter at the beginning and is in the range of roughly 40,000 to 50,000 - it is a first year Jazz Bass.

+1

IIRC, the first Jazz Bass didn't even say "JAZZ BASS" on the headstock.

Some of the first jazzbasses had 2 seperate 5 pole humbucker pickups before settling in on an agreed dual pickup design,I have seen pics of a 1 piece body&neck see through type of acrylic made jazzbass,it allowed Leo to show to his prospective customers how everything is designed and how it looks when all together and also while playing or making adjustments to the bass its shows the truss in action.
All the demo "one of" models were either destroyed, taken home by...or hung as a decoration in the shop so if there's a few floating around they are priceless,I am not sure 100% of what went on at Fender a verylong time ago and the rare basses are just that rare along with their true identity or application,so consider yourself lucky to even have seen one, nevermind own it .

A guy I know has a 60. He had some crap 7 year old strings on it. It was filthy and grungy and worn to heck and back. He played it at every gig - this was 1999. That's the last I saw it. I took his place in the band- His parents bought it for him new in 1960. It sounded like junk because of the old strings and gack all over it. If I remember right it was kind of heavy.

Very nice. Thanks for the picture. I don't get to see alot of 60 Jazzes except old pictures of them. Great!!!!

Anyone with a 60 Jazz deserves a cornbread pan. So I give you one. It is an honored gift and gives you great status amoungst all bass players as a purvayor of the deep. You may do with it as you will. It may look good in your signature or on your mantle. Thanks.
