Hello all;
First time poster :D Just a quick question. I have an old 1962 Fender Jazz Bass, and have just noticed that one of the tuner paddles ( E string ) is slightly uneven ( not quite vertical ) to the rest. Is this a common thing in the early ones, and if not, is it something that can be rectified. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Baysman

Have you checked the machine head mounting screws for tightness? Is the bushing fully seated? When rotating the tuner paddle does the tuner paddle seem to change angles or does the remain angle the same?

Hey BrotherDave. Thanks for the reply. The post is straight and everything is flush. If one were to look at the tuner head on, the paddle is tilted slightly to the left. Hope that makes sense :)

Sounds like it got bent- I've had those and I usually straighten them up myself but they never look perfect. If I were you go see what a good repair guy says. You could always buy a vintage tuner thats not bent--

A picture would be worth alot on this perdicament.

Its very common on older and newer pre-owned basses alike; having one or even two bent tuners,It usually comes from getting bounced around when playing out and not using a case or good gigbag for protection.
I have worked on basses of people who only played at home winding up with a few bent tuners, dropping the bass, turning around and nailing a wall, and another person knocking it over by not paying attention, and closing It's headstock in its case not designed for this perticular model or scale.
The tuners are easily replaced no matter if its a newer or older bass,or made here or in another country they are fairly easy to locate them.

Many thanks for everyone's input. Any chance these tuners can be repaired, as this bass is completely stock :)

I couldn't see the pic of the tuner or the bass to determine anything about it. I bought an old tuner from a guy downtown at a music store for $40 about 2 or 3 years ago. So you can find them and the patina should match what you have if you get an older one. As soon as you tell them it's for a real 62 Jazz- then the dollar signs lite up and they may want 200 bucks or more. You may have to do an under cover James Bond thing to get one. OR there are guys here in my town that can relic a new one. Not sure of exactly what you have because I couldn't open the flicker pic thing.

Took it to my guitar repairer today. He just straightened it up, and just put some adhesive glue into the joins. The paddle itself moves under pressure, but I just don't want it to get any worse. I assume as the machine heads are hard riveted in, you can't replace the rivet itself. I am not too keen on getting a set of " aged " tuners.

It is very interesting to see the painted headstock of the bass. What color is it? If it's a dark cherry kind of metallic color I don't think I've ever seen that. How about some good pics of the whole bass? I don't ever recall that color. Maybe it's just the lighting,

IF its the original finish you have a very nice bass(its a nice bass regaurdless if the finish is original or not),matching headstocks were not a usual production finish, thats a special order option I believe.
It looks like the tuner paddle is'nt bent but more like loose on the rivet,if you need to replace it for posterity sake then you can buy a exact replica of your tuner that has been aged chemically and allowing you to have a straight one that matches without selling the home to finance it and still have the original should you later choose to fix it or sell it as original.

+1

I'd like to see the reverse side of the headstock as well.

Is there was a way I could tighten it, as it is slightly loose on the rivet. A common issue I believe usually found on either the E or G tuners. In regards to the color, the bass is a candy apple red color top. I've retired her from gigging these days, but she is still played regularly :D

Can anyone point me in the right direction in regards to getting a set of aged replica tuners. Once again, thank you all so much for your feedback and enthusiasm for all things Jazz Bass.
