No pics here.

It looks like the previous owner was a bit aggressive with a pick. Could this lead to electronics problems on a gig/rehearsal? Should I buy a new pickup entirely? Still sounds good, just a little worried.

No pic no bass problem

Are you just vain (no seriously, I am) or is it giving you problems? If you're looking for justification to buy new pups, I'd say go for it, it's your bass and you want it looking good. My sensible side says no, but my vain side say, DO IT!

I've not helped you have I...put it this way, if you are just reasoning with it, don't. If you're going to be unhappy either way, do it. Good luck!

This sounds like a question for a Lace tech. tech@lacemusic.com is the email address. I'd attach a closeup well lit photo so the tech can clearly view it. It is possible this same problem has come up before with these pickups and they have a repair service or replacement part available that will make it a non-issue for much less cost than a new pickup.

Lace doesn't do bass pickups any more. They do make bass guitars now with a different design of pickup type(according to their site). Very strange.

If I have any trouble I'll just buy one on ebay, maybe.

You're joking!

Lace still making bass pickups, from the familiar original Sensor types to the more recent Alumitone series models for Precision and Jazz Basses. Check this link out:

They also do Alumitone Bass Bars:

The only Lace bass pickups which are no longer in production is the Transensor series line.

I'd love to have a fretless version of the Jazz Plus 4 string. Maybe someday....

...such this one?

The Jazz Bass Plus never existed as a fretless version.

Of course the American Deluxe models produced between 1995 and 2009 came with a fretless rosewood fretboard with 22 fretlines (1997-2001) and abalone face dots (2004-2009).

If you want a fretless J-Bass Plus, the only solution is to pull out the frets from the fretboard.

Only a professional luthier can do this cool job for you unless you've enough skills to DIY.

The J-Bass Plus was available either with an alder or ash body and boasted an active/passive circuitry designed by NY luthier Phil Kubicki. The 5-string version sported a pau ferro fretboard.

Pau ferro was a nice alternative to rosewood and maple and there's no surprise Fender selected this dense wood as a fretboard material for their five-string basses until 2006.

The bass you're talking about was the 40th Anniversary Precision Bass. It shared many of the key features found on both P and J-Bass Plus, sporting an attractive figured maple top, gold hardware and a birdseye maple neck with a 22-fret ebony fingerboard and abalone side dots.

Only 400 of these limited-edition basses were made at the Fender Custom Shop between 1991 and 1992, with the prices estimated between $1500 and $1800 USD.
