I have a 1998 Mexican Fender Jazz Bass. Its black. I was wondering, if I stripped off the paint, would the wood be worth seeing? I thought it might be cool to have the rather naked Fender look, but am a bit concerned that the wood underneath may be sub-par looking since it was originally painted. Any thoughts on this would be most appreciated.

It's probably poplar, and probably not the prettiest chunk of it, either.

I had a similar urge to strip my MIM 1996 Strat, and my guitar repairman at the time talked me out of it... said the wood under the paint was probably full of nasty green streaks. Not to mention how hard it is to get that finish off... I called a professional wood stripper and asked them if they'd ever done an electric guitar. They said, "Yeah, and we'll never do another one!" (I'm guessing the one they did was coated in modern space-age polymers.)

The most cost effective way to get a bare wood look:

Sell the black body. Buy a nice naked wood body from Warmoth's Showcase. Finish the new one in Danish oil. Easy, beautiful, and it only cost you $150 or so.

I was thinking of doing the same but with my VM. I was planning on stripping the clearcoat then tung oil it. I went to a site - - don't remember which one - - it tells you how to do it, not an easy task, you gotta be very committed. I agree with Gravity Jim, get a new body from Warmoth.
